The Mrs. surprised me with a brand new 65 deluxe reverb for Xmas. Which is so amazing I used to use the mustang gt and had problems with it. With this new amp the tone is incredible, but I am brand new to tube amps so a few question.
1 I turn it on in standby to warm up, and works great, but when I either put it back into standby or turn the power off i get a huge pop from the speaker, I really do not want to destroy my new amp so is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I have been plugged into the vibrato 1 input and turned that volume down but it still happens. Do I need to turn both volumes down, or turn everything down?
2. Love the tone so much better than the mustang gt. But I cannot crank the volume to get natural overdrive in my living room so I’m looking for recommendations on the best pedal for slight overdrive for this amp.

Thank you to all for any advice I can get.

I have a fairly new 65 Twin Reverb Reissue. I also get a huge pop or thump when switching off standby (turning amp on full power). I don't get this noise when I turn amp off. It doesn't matter if everything is turned down and nothing plugged in. I've researched it and am convinced it's "normal", no big deal and won't hurt anything. I've had the amp 4 years and it just gets better. I'm not much help with your 2nd question. My ear drums will breakup before my Twin does. I like the Boss Blues Driver 2 pedal for overdrive. There's many options.

Someone with more amp experience, please chime in on the "pop" and "overdrive"..

The popping, while not 'normal', seems to be typical for many of these amps. My '93 DRRI and my '99 TRRI do not pop, nor does my vintage '68 Deluxe Reverb. However my '78 Deluxe Reverb produces an audible "thump" when the standby switch is engaged. The likely cause is a tired switch or one manufactured offshore to the lowest price point possible.

As for an OD pedal, it's a virtual Baskin-Robbins out there -- at least 31 flavors available (probably more). For a straight-up boost it's hard to beat the Fulltone OCD or Ibanez's TS9 Tube Screamer. For meatier saturated tones, the Bad Monkey or Proco Rat create a metalesque timbre that's quite useful for modern (heavy) rock.

Unrelated to the above, you might consider investing in a Radial Big Shot A/B/Y pedal. This foot-switchable device adds channel-switching capability to any dual-channel amp not already so equipped, permitting dual signal paths to be created. Add the effects pedals of your choice and the sonic possibilities are endless.

Good luck and enjoy your new amp.

Good point. A while back I had this crazy, extremely loud noise when I engaged the standby switch. It healed itself, but once in a blue moon, it'll snap at me just to make sure I'm still alive. I'll probably replace it if the noise comes back. I can live with the thump. BTW, my old (1966), real vintage BF Super Reverb never made a noise.

Back then, every amp was performance-tested before it was crated and sent to the loading dock for shipment. Any product that failed this screening was returned to the assembly bench for troubleshooting and repair, per standing order from plant manager Forrest White.

In those days, we had a variety of Fender BF amps - Super, Twin, and piggy backs. We would toss those things around with violence because they were so heavy and we were just teens. They never failed. Cables were another matter. I'm afraid to even move my current Twin. It seems so fragile, but the sound is still there.

My TRRI pre-dates the introduction of RoHS-compliant solder so I don't really worry about it falling apart due to rough transit treatment. It's been rock-solid reliable for the 250 or 300 gigs I've used it on since purchase in January of 2000. I wouldn't toss it around with the same reckless abandon that I would with a vintage Fender amp but I'm confident that with continued "adult-owned-and-driven" treatment it'll outlast me.

My 2012 DRRI popped like that from day 1, still sounds great though.
To ease the issue when your done playing:
Turn the volume to zero
Turn off the reverb & trem
Turn the on/off switch to OFF
Turn the standby switch to Standby(ready to be powered up for the next session)
That should minimize any popping noise

For a gentle boost into OD, I use a Fender competition drive pedal, tone/gain to taste and about 7-8 on the level.

This.
There is no need to put the amp on standby before powering down.

Solder a 0.0047 mfd caps on stanby switch= no more pop

It sounds like this is a common thing, I just wanted to make sure that I was not going to do any damage to the ampby turning it off. Thanks for the input. It is quite the upgrade from my mustang GT 40, the sound is amazing.
I think that I am leaning to the tube screamer right now, it seems to be what I am looking for to help get to that overdrive I want without killing every ones ears in the house.

The Mrs. gave you a great surprise. Enjoy. I'm still on the quest for the perfect overdrive, but I'm OK for now with the BD2

Awesome amp, I have had one for years now, and yep it pops the same way, and the vibrato makes little clicky noises, but the amp sounds great.. And there are mods to fix those issues..

These amps take pedals really well. Currently I am using old Hardwire CM2's and Fulltone Full-Drive2 Mosfet for overdrive. Sounds pretty good in my ears.. If you want to go budget, I also use Joyo's, the Deluxe Crunch and the Sweet Baby sound pretty good. There are a ton of overdrives out there..
