I have a blues Deluxe that is eating preamp tubes like crazy. Right now I have to put in a new V1 about every six hours of playing. I can get one gig out it before it starts to loose power and sound distorted. I put a new valve in V1 and we are back in business for about another 6 hours. I have had it to a tech, or atleast that is what he calls himself and he has no explaination. First he said that it was a bad tube, but this is the fourth tube that I have had in it in the last three months.

Does anyone have any idea of what may be the problem, or where to start looking ?

Thanks,
Wildman

Hey Wildman,

How comfortable do you feel taking some voltage readings and reading schematics?

I'd start by checking the plate load resistors for V1 marked R4 and R9, both 100k 1/2 watt. There are several voltage test points to check in that area. You can get to those test points with the back off.... Also check all the tube socket solder joints for cracked joints.

Here is the schematic for it:
http://www.fender.com/support/amp_schematics/pdfs/Blues_Deluxe_Schematic.pdf you have to have Adobe to get it.

When the tech  said it was a bad tube, did he check it with a tube checker? Or for that matter, are you able to check any of the tubes that you pulled out? Its possible another component is causing the tube to sound bad when it isnt. However, my first thought is the load resistors for that tube.

Just my .02 cents! :)

Good luck and be careful!

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I am comfortable in checking voltages. I will take it down and do some checking around the circuit to see what I can find. Thanks you for the schematic link.

No, the tech didn't test the tubes, just replaced them and called it that. Then when I went back again, still the same old thing. So I decided to start trouble shooting it myself. I really don't think this guy is much of a tech. I have heard horror stories about this guy and I am beginning to believe what I hear.
