I am not really 100% on the Celestion 10/30s that came with my 68 Custom Vibrolux. I am looking to get a speaker sound comparable to the original Vibrolux sound. Something that has good twang but breaks up and has grit.

Any recommendations?

Custom Vibrolux is not same amp as the "original" Vibrolux that is why the name "Custom".

You may put a better speaker but I don't know what about the tone.

Eminence -- their Copperhead or Ragin' Cajun (or perhaps one of each). Great vintage tone at reasonable cost.

Yup totally get that. I wish I could have found a vintage one that wasn't so expensive. Honestly the only thing I don't like about the custom are the speaker tone and it seems it sort of compresses the guitar sound. I have a vintage 68 deluxe reverb that I play surf punk with and when I bang on the strings it seriously gets loud and overdrives more. I love that. The custom VR sounds really good but caps that overdrive sort of if that makes sense.

Anyways thanks for the suggestions. What about Jensen speakers? They were some of the original ones correct?

There have been a few amplifiers with Vibrolux in the name.
If you are referring to the Black/Silver Face Vibrolux Reverb (which your amplifier is loosely based on) they mostly came with Jensen C10Q or sometimes Oxford 10L5.
I think you can still get the C10Q but you could also try the P10Q, the P10R or the C10R
If it were me I would likely go for the P10R if I wanted Jensens.
Or a P10Q and a P10R since there's two.
There's no law says you have to run both the same.

My all-original '66 Vibrolux Reverb (built in January) left Fullerton with a pair of Fender-marked Jensen C10NS's. I've never seen a VR factory-equipped with C10R's or C10Q's. Fender and Jensen parted ways later in the year leaving the Oxford 10L5 or its Utah equivalent as the sole OEM speaker for this amp.

According to "the Fender Amp Field Guide" Blackface's usually came with Jensen C10Q or Oxford 10L5, and early Silverfaces came with Oxford 10L5 or CTS 10" AlNiCos

I like SICA Jensen RIs, I have a few in various vintage amps. In some internet circles, RI's get an undeserved bad rap. The Jensen brand was brought back to life by a company named "Recotton" who went bankrupt within 2 years (due to owning a ton of other audio companies and cutting corners) Somewhere around that time it appears that the Reissues got a bad name. Possibly because "Recotton" was cutting corners? IDK.... (hence maybe why "Recotton" went out of business.... who knows...)

The Italian company by the name of SICA bought Jensen from "Recotton" and has produced them in Ripa Italy at a state of the art factory ever since, (FYI Sica is Europe's version of Eminence) SICA has been adding to the lineup ever since with the Mod and Jet series

. IMO SICA has done a great job at replicating Chicago Jensens. For me personally, Jensen RIs have the truest vintage vibe out of all the other Chicago Jensen clones on the market. They have the right vintage efficiency and the right break up with that classic crisp Chicago papery American Chime. The downside... They have a long break in time but IMO its worth the wait. I've found they mature just like the originals and get mellower and mellower.

SICA's Jensen RI C10Qs is closets to the original C10Q that I know.. (it has the vintage correct magnet weight/ i.e. strength, the vintage correct dope amount/ i.e. correct vintage speaker sensitivity i.e efficiency ) ** Probably will be quite bright out of the box, but if like all the other Sica Jensens RIs I've owned after about 6 months with start to soften and mellow real nice with age.

In this "I got to have the gratification now" Era, many bad internet reviews on speakers in general are because people are not letting the speaker break in and mature before moving on.

You also have the Alnico P10Q .. If 10 inch is like the P12Q (I have these in a Pro Reverb, & are really nice. Great moderate break up with a low efficiency that allows me to reach the Pro's sweet spot and a lower volume than any modern high efficient, high headroom speakers on the market. (and sound extremely vintage and classic Fender doing it)

My 1971 VLR came with two aftermarket 10-inch CTS alnico speakers. For me, a near perfect combination, for this amp. I got lucky, with the purchase... as used CTS are kinda $$$.

Rog, my 70's SFVR had a pair of C10Qs and the other "Bimmer" has CTS.

Huh ...

The C10N seems like it would be a bit on the dark side for that amp. Yes/No?

In any case it seems clear there may have been a few aberrations.

.

I regret selling that amp.

The C10NS's sound heavenly, especially with a Strat. Not very efficient (SPL around 94 dB) so they let the amp really cook without being overly loud.

The only Fender amps I've ever seen with original C10R's or C10Q's were the early blackface 4 x 10 Concert Amp, the pre-66 Super Reverb, and the two Princetons models. Both of those speakers had relatively low power-handling capability (20 and 25 watts, respectively) and, in the case of the Super Reverb, were easily overdriven to the point of physical damage.

This is all great information! Thank you. I love reading about your amps and speaker combinations. If I get a pair of 10" speakers I would get 8 ohms right? Or two 16's to come out to 8 ohms paired?

A pair of 8Ω, 50-watt speakers (any brand/type) will get the job done.
