Hi all!

As a short background, I recently sold a JVM410 satriani head to move to a Fender combo. I narrowed it down to a Fender Twin or a Deluxe Reverb 65 re-issue, I then bought a Fender Twin Reverb 65.

The amp is incredible and everything id want in a clean combo, I chose the Twin Reverb over the Deluxe as following a conversion with a couple of sellers, it seemed that there was an issue with clean headroom on the Deluxe.

Following playing a few gigs with my new jazz/funk/neo soul band the weight and size of the Twin still seems overkill for me, and i'm still tempted by the form factor of the deluxe.

I understand that almost every show i will play will be mic'd therefore anything from a micro cube would be sufficient, however we have a large studio and clean headroom is definitely a worry as my tone is super clean 80 percent of the time, with broken up tones only used for more sustain in lead sections.

This brings me to my question, I use the Twin on volume 4 and rarely ever need more volume than this, i would be very grateful if someone with decent experience of both amps could inform me of whether the deluxe reverb would still stay clean at a similar volume or would be on the verge of breakup with heavier picking.

I use a 2010 USA Strat with Fat 50's.

Many thanks in advance

Dave

Twin is a 100 watts amp and Deluxe Rev a 22 watts.

More and more clean with a Twin.

The absolute king of amazing tone, Fender clean headroom is an amp you can only rarely find on the used market called the Dual Professional, made briefly in the early to mid 90s.

The Twin Reverb would be second best so you made a good choice seeing the DP is so rare.
A VibroKing or a Super Reverb would have been my personal choice in that situation.
Not quite as much overkill as a Twin but still plenty of amp.

Congrats.
Enjoy.

"Plenty of amp" indeed.

The Super Reverb re-issue would be a good alternative to a TRRI but they are an ankle-buster to carry around and weigh nearly as much as the Twin Reverb. Loud/clean Fender tone has its price and unfortunately it is non-negotiable.

In general, a 6V6GT output tube amp is going to sound different than a 6L6GC one. Just the nature of the beast. 6L6GC tend to be louder and cleaner. Both amps being built to same engineering standards.

You want clean? Prolly the dual 6L6GC is a better alternative (like a Super Reverb or a Pro).

I routinely gig a Twin in a Country Band. Twin Reverb is a very versatile amp. I use a luggage carrier with some buggy cords. The weight is reduced to picking it up and setting it down.. then I just roll it in. Ezzee Peezy

I use a Silverface 1975 that been Blackfaced (IMO best era for Twin Reverbs due to the master volume.. usually use it right on the verge of breakup. To get a decent overdrive at low volumes .... the method is to crank the mids up past 8+ dial in the treble and base accordingly... this overdrives the preamp. Then you crank the reg volume and work it all with the master volume.

The net result: a nice tweed type overdrive at a modern gig volume. People who "dog" on early Silverfaces with MV's apparently don't know that method of working a 3 band tone stack.

The 68 Custom Twin Reverb has attracted my attention since Fender rolled it out. I've heard nothing but good things about it. The custom channel with the Baseman tone stack.. I'm wondering what will happen if one cranks the mids on that channel..
