Hi All
I just bought the above amp at a yard sale for 25.00.
I pulled the speaker and amp out so I can deoxit the pots and replace the power supply caps. What else should I do or look for as a possible problem. Should I pull the spring reverb out?
The 12" speaker lost it's fender sticker but it did have a p/n 025923
Sticker on the magnet ring. It is the same number that is called out in the parts list. I think it's called a fender special something.
The serial number on the cabinet is LO-119050
Thanks

Fender Special Design.
It's a speaker made for Fender by Eminence and it is a pretty commonly found speaker in stock Fender amps.
It's OK but there are definitely better options out there.
A well chosen speaker swap could be the best thing you ever do to your amp.
If you are considering upgrading the speaker, take some time to think about what you want in a speaker and then do your research.
There can be huge differences in tone and volume from one speaker to the next and it is all about personal preference.
People will be happy to give you their opinions but only you can decide what is right for you so take your time.
Of course, it goes without saying you need to be sure to match your ohms.

One pretty good option might be to contact Weber Speakers and have them suggest something for you.
Even just going to their website and reading the descriptions can be informative.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I did notice the speaker was pretty light and since it is 28 years old i guess the cone might be a little tired.

The SS amps of that era use speaker feedback loops to compensate for speaker error. Specifically back EMF. This is the voltage generated by the speaker when the suspension is pushing the voice coil back to center.
R82 is a .47ohm resistor connected between the negative speaker lead and ground. The voltage generated is sent to the negative feedback loop to correct the difference between preamp signal and speaker position.
You can see where this is leading.
A different speaker with a different size magnet will have significantly different reaction to the compensation circuit. Yes, you can hear the difference. The same thing will happen when you plug in headphones. They are tied into the same circuit.
The choices for a speaker drop when you get into 75-80 watt speakers, but a 100 watt will produce too much back EMF. If it runs, I would leave it alone.

Be very careful if you need to pull knobs. If they are too tight, it can damage the control just by pulling on them. Slowly pry alternately on each side with two slot screwdrivers.
If the pots aren't scratchy, I wouldn't wash them out. You remove the grease off the shaft and the aluminum starts to corrode and bind the shaft.
What you will probably need to do is to resolder the board around the pots, jacks & big resistors.
Have fun...

Good stuff thanks. I had one knob I had to pull on kinda hard the rest were okay. Can compressed air clean he pots? Should I remove the PCB from it's chassis to spray f needed. The 1989 caps are 2200 mfd PCB mount at 50 volts. If I buy new 100 volt ones they are probably asmaller foot print and the snap in solder pins won't line up the is just a guess. Should I buy radial long wire ones? If they are not touching each other do I need the white insulated material that is between them? If the amp does not hum can I just leave them? Do you have to pull the spaces off of the power switch to remove the pcb

Ran it today all I did was detox it all the pots they are all quit except the volume on the second channel. It gets better the more I use it. One problem is the channel one input jack crackling when you move the cable is that a broken solder joint? Channel two jack seems fine. I'm going to pull the circuit board Monday and look it over. No hum in the caps not even warm. What a great find for 25.00

Yea, broken solder on the jacks is common. Pulling the board will let you resolder as needed.
Use different colors of sharpie markers to tag wires and matching lugs.
Comparing the end play in the shaft of the pots indicates whether one is damaged.

Thanks Tim
The markers are a good idea. The speaker had the white wire on positive is that correct. What is the chance of the actual jack being bad as well. Should I reflo all jack joints just to check for cold joints.
It seems like according to the parts list that I have three TRS and three TS Jack's. Why would channels 1 and 2 be stereo?
Thanks for all your help.

Found that r80 5watt .47 ohm resistor was loose and that the channel one jack was replaced so I re flowed the joints.
Glued the face plate and now will install and try again
How do you add pics

on pretty much any other forum? Just click the 'attach' button and browse to the pic. But this is the Fender forum. You must save the attachment onto a secure USB flash drive and attach it to a carrier pigeon. Be sure the pigeon has been trained to fly to 17600 N Perimeter Dr #100, Scottsdale, AZ 85255. When the pigeon arrives in Arizona with your attachment (assuming it lives) , Brad will edit your post to add the pic. :D

Wow maybe Fender is running out of server space with all of those orders for 1/4" PCB mount input Jack's.

On the Deluxe 85, you can run both channels in parallel, and mix clean with overdrive, by plugging into channel 2. That is why they are both TRS jacks.

I realize this is an older thread but is anyone experiencing their amp channel 1 gets extremely loud if the volume level is turned past 1? I bought mine new back in the '80's and still use it regularly but cannot turn the volume level past 1 or it gets unbearably loud for bedroom practice. Thanks in advance.
