Leo was retired from Fender long before they started taking shortcuts in manufacture with cheesy PCB's and plastic jacks. Even the CBS era amps weren't bad even though the construction was a little sloppy. They still held up very well. My Twins been great for over 30 years. Martin guitars didn't use truss rods way back either. Leo holds many patents in his lifetime.

You're right, he was retired, but he was known for buying large lots of cheap parts for the guitars and amps when he was. He wouldn't put truss rods in the original necks because he felt they would not warp and were strong enough. He felt that necks were easy and cheap to replace and another source of income.

Where did you get this information? CBS was responsible for driving Fender into the ground in the mid - late 70's not Leo Fender. Why do you think the early stuff is so coveted? Why do you think there was G&L?

Yes, CBS did run it into the ground. Interesting that Fender and Gibson and even Martin, were close to all going out of business after either being taken over by big corporations or expanding to much into areas where they had no expertise. You may know that Gretsch actually did after being bought by Baldwin Pianos. If you read the history of Fender you will see that Leo would buy bundles of cheap parts. Now understand, I am not saying he didn't make good quality products. I mean, he pretty much invented amps as we know them today and for the most part they are still pretty good. Truth is he was always looking to save a buck when and how ever he could and part were an easy way to do that. I mean, you spend $700 on a HRD and you get plastic input jacks, which always seem to crap out. My cheap Vox practice amps have better quality inputs jacks. With the parts and the way Fender has been wiring the amps to get more amps completed faster, the quality has gone down a bit since moving their amp operation to Mexico. Just read the postings. Sure many people don't have problems, but IMHO too many people are having problems with issues that should never rear their ugly heads. Listen, I own two Fender amps and nothing but Fender Electric guitars, so I support and love my Fenders. I had to get the input jacks replaced on my Blues DeVille 410 as well as having some of the wiring re wired. I am sure Marshall also has problems and the new Vox stuff coming our of china may not be as good as the old stuff.

Martin was and still is family owned and never had quality issues.
Leo had nothing to do with the HRDlx. He was dead before the amp ever came out.
I believe FMIC is employee owned so blame them not Leo. He had pcb technology in the 50's and wouldn't use it. He saw the writing on the wall. I agree about the construction of the new amps. Leo had nothing to do with new amp construction. All you can do is buy boutique or build your own.
FMIC chose to use pcb's in the reissue amps to make them cheaper and the results more repeatable. I also don't like the cheap components they use especially in the power sections of the new amps. It's a real shame.
