I rented a Hot Rod Deville 212 and man is it sweet. I'm converted (current rig is a Traynor). The 212 has too much power for my basement at 60W, I have the volume at 2.

Question - does the Deluxe sound as good (pick attack, fullness of sound, bass response)?

Any insight would be helpful.

MK

Hey MK!

Dont give up on the Deville..... I have a Deville 410 and found it to was way to loud for home use. However, I found this schematic http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/newland/2081/id3.htm of a volume box for the Deluxe/Deville and built it. If you are able to do a little soldering, give this a try. Cheap and very easy and best of all WORKS!!! Now I can crank up the gain to get decent crunch or distortion, but still not bother anyone sitting in the next room.... :)

Back to your question though.... I think the deluxe and deville are built on very similar circuits, so they would probably sound similar. I'd go to a guitar store that has both a listen. However.... the deluxe is still going to rock the house, so you may end up building this little volume box for it anyway!

good luck!
Keith

You could always get a Hot Rod Deluxe + the new extension cabinet and have a 2 X 12 mini stack.

Thanks for the replies. I deviated from my original thinking and purchased a Princeton Reverb RI last night.

Yup - I noticed on the other thread you bought the Princeton. That is a big change from what you were thinking....but hey...congratulations...sometimes we just think aloud. You could still get the HRD extension cabinet later for use with the Princeton.

Enjoy!

It was a big change and the process of evaluating amps made me realize a couple of things. First, I don't want or need an effects loop as I find my pedals react different based on the construction of the loop. Next, I don't need/want two channels as I prefer the sound I get from my boosters and dirt boxes. Also, I like the tone stack on my amp to be simple. The Princeton did all that plus offered a tube driven reverb and tube driven tremelo. I also liked the rectifier was tube based. I thought the amp in general was very vintage. Finally, wanted to exercise the amp and a 40-60 watt amp was conceivably too loud to be fully utilized. The Princeton 15W is crazy loud for its wattage. Makes me wonder if this is a class A amp... need to look into that further.
