In recent years I've had some bad luck with my HRD. It's been to a local tech twice.

A few weeks back I had it repaired to fix muddy sound and drop in volume. He changed the jacks, a resistor and replaced some bad joints. It came back fine.

This week it just jumped to a muddier tone all of a sudden (not as bad as before). It sounds like I'm playing a guitar with nasty, ancient strings on. Quite flat as if its all been compressed but string noise and taps are now quite sensitive to hear too.

I opened it up and checked the bias. Set it from 68 to 78. Not long had the caps and tubes replaced too as well as a few other bits.

Any ideas what I could check myself? I don't want to spend more on a tech just yet and I'm confident draining caps and soldering, etc.

If you just paid to get a symptom fixed and its still there, you shouldn't have to pay twice to get it fixed.
Likely as not, the tech disturbed the connections enough to chase the symptom away for a while.
Given its age, I would suspect cracked soldering on the tube sockets. Look for a fracture ring in the solder around the pins. If that doesn't fix it, resolder the main board. You probably don't have any failed components.
Also, clean the NC contacts of the external speaker jack with cardstock.

I had my HRD fixed for switching channels all by itself, even though I did not have the pedal hooked up, I only use the clean channel, the tech did a fix on it by replacing the channel switching jack in the amp. That may be your problem.
