I have a chance to perform at a small gallery event and have no PA or anything (and have no experience doing this!). I want to play acoustic and be mic'd and able to use reverb. I have a Mustang III, but doubt I could do anything with this. Seeing people online say they use the Acoustasonic 40 or VOX 50 for this kind of use. The Vox has a little tube in it and is supposed to sound nice, the Fender, 2X6.5" speakers. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Are these type of little amps any good for this low demand type of use? (Don't think anyone will want me to be jamming out while people look and talk about the art!)

Thanks!

Personally, I'd lean toward the Acoustasonic 40. Is the "VOX 50" the MV50?

Actually, Vox VX50AG (sorry for not being clear!)

http://www.voxamps.com/VX50Series

It has an 8" speaker and tweeter whereas the Fender has no crossover/tweeter, but two 6" speakers (with "whizzer cones," whatever they are!).

I guess, I'm always partial to Fender, but the new Vox looks pretty nice. Also, as far as I can see, the reason to go with a just a little acoustic amp is for simplicity. The Vox has phantom power so I have more mic choices without having to get an external power supply.

Oh... and I haven't seen either amp locally so I have to probably go with people's opinions who've used them.

I guess I'm also just looking for general thoughts on simple little gigs like this... since I've never done them with my own amp/PA... most Open Mic's have their own PA and you just plug in.

Thanks!

I found a mint Vox VX50AG for $150 so I just bought it. We'll see how the little thing works.

Best all!

The Vox phantom power is usually only 12 volts, not 48. So its limited in how much it can run. If you have an amplified mike, it may not provide enough juice. The common issue is the mike mutes when you shout into it.
For a gallery or any presentation that is "wallpaper music", its common to setup in front of a wall and point the amp at yourself and the wall. This keeps your dynamics from interfering with conversation and bounces a wide field off the wall to spread evenly around the room. Since its an inefficient setup, you can use a larger amp like your Mustang.

Thanks for the tip on aiming amp toward the wall! I'll play with that.

I guess, I'll look for a cheap/little mixer to see how the Mustang works with vocals+acoustic. The one time I plugged my electro/acoustic into it, I didn't like the sound that came out... probably just have to find the right settings.

As a total noob, didn't think about the phantom power output. The Vox gives 15v and my AT2035 only requires 11v, so that's all good... trouble being that I've been preferring my Samson CO2 which does require 48v, so probably no-go. Do most mics work ok as long as they get the minimum? Might look at other inexpensive hyper-cardioid pattern mics... but will see how my Sennheiser e835 seeing is supposed to be made for this type of use... I've just found that unless my vocals are louder than normal, I get too much guitar spillage in the vocal track.

Thanks for the tips! As I said, I'm a total noob and mostly have only done DIY recordings or open mics events where they take care of the sound (for better and worst!).

Best!

Most condenser mikes will be too sensitive to isolate guitar from vocal.
An sm58 has good isolation, if imperfect sound.

That's why I had been going to the hyper-cardioid pattern condenser mikes. I have a Sennheiser E835 which is supposed to be very similar to the SM58, so I'll try that. I wasn't using that for recording because the low output forced me to push my Tascam's little preamps into the noisy zone, but for this application, the dynamic mic will probably work out well.

Thanks!

I've heard that the Acoustasonic 40 is actually louder than the 90 watt version from some of the reviews I've read , so if you're going to go Acoustic and you're on a budget, then I would go with that amp. But if you have around $325 or so to spend, then go and get the Fishman Loudbox Mini , which is a 60 watt powerhose and IMO, the best sounding acoustic amp going today. I bought one last December and have never regretted it.
