Interesting, but I think he missed the point, particularly in the case of the amp with a SS rectifier.

I believe that this is exactly what Arjay was referring to; conducting current through cold tubes is not good for the tubes. The light bulb analogy is a good one. Warming the tubes before they start conducting is the point of using the standby when powering on the amp, not spikes of current.

In the case of an amp with a tube rectifier, which has a slow ramp of voltage output, the tubes still have a short time to warm up before they start conducting, although the point can be made about using the standby for even longer warm up time.

Thanks for the responses.

That was an interesting video, 63supro, a good lab test of what happens. This was one of the videos I came across when I was trying to figure out what to do, and thus put my question together. I’m a guitar guy who would have to be shown how to use an oscilloscope, so while this (and may other) videos make sense, some of the comments to this and other videos point to the need to use the switch for other reasons.

(btw, I love your quote about life!)

Shimmilou, the light bulb analogy makes sense to me, as Arjay had said. Thanks for explaining the difference with a tube rectifier.

I’ve been using my standby switch. It’s easy to use and just seems like the thing to do.

And I am loving this amp!

What made sense to me about that video is many amps way back never had standby switches. I have a 74 Champ, no standby and never had any tube issues. The tubes in that thing last for years and years. I just replaced what may have been the original 6V6 about a year ago because of tube rattle, not because of failure. I got a oscilloscope a couple of years ago and did the same test with a Marshall 18 watt clone I built that I modded with a switchable tube/solid state rectifier and saw his results first hand and I still use the standby. Your 65 reissue is a timeless classic, enjoy it and best of luck with it.

Yep, Champ with a tube rectifier.

I am curious to know what the actual peak currents were in the video. ‘Quite a bit of current” or “not a lot of difference” doesn’t really tell us much at all, other than there is some difference that wasn’t measured accurately. I wouldn’t say that any “myths” have been “busted” simply based on some vague current tests.
