I'm 70 and challenged by this stuff so I appreciate the help the wise folks here can provide.

I have a Mustang III amp that simply stopped making any sound this morning. It powers up just fine and I can see all the customized pre-set names when I scroll around but no sound. I just uploaded the Fuse software to my Windows computer hoping this would serve some purpose but I have yet to figure that out. For now, I'm assuming that I need to 'reboot' by restoring the amp to factory pre-sets. I don't want to lose my pre-sets so I somehow need to transfer them to my computer and then somehow restore them to my amp after I've 'rebooted'. Yes/no? If yes, how do I do all this and, if no, what should I do?

Thanks!

Hi, what version of Windows are you running?

I can help you get the software loaded. I'm pretty doubtful the factory reset will help, as the complete loss of sound seems like a physical problem. But it's certainly worth a shot. And in the worst case, if you really like that amp, you would probably be able to pick up a used amp pretty cheap and restore the backup to that one. In case you were unaware, this amp line has been discontinued.

Thanks Shim'. Unfortunately the installation instructions in the manual neglect to mention a few fine points such as using a user account that has administrator permissions for the PC, or making sure Windows has been fully updated. This is out of date software running on an abandoned platform. It's kind of a hail Mary to get it to work at all.

I have Windows 10 Home. I know how to download the software and I know how to restore the factory pre-sets. I have the "Advanced Manual" which explains that. What I don't know is how to save my pre-sets before I attempt to restore the factory pre-sets and whether they can be saved to my computer? If so, how?

You might be right that this will accomplish nothing if the problem is "physical"? The amp worked perfectly 24 hours before the problem. The only sound I get is the type of sound you get when you have turn dirty pots...the whoshy sound of dusty pots!

The pots on Mustangs are sealed, but the plastic input jack could be worn out or simply dirty.

A couple other quick checks: try a different cable and check the speaker’s spade terminals. Does the amp work when listening through the headphone jack? The headphone jack is also made of plastic and has caused a few guitarists problems.

Hey OnAnotherNote:

BACKUP

1. Connect the amp to the computer
2. In Fender Fuse, click the UTILITIES menu and select Backup...
3. When prompted, select where you would like to store the backup file on your computer

IF YOU WANT TO TEST THE BACKUP (not a bad idea)

1. Connect the amp to the computer
2. In Fender Fuse, click the UTILITIES menu and select Restore...
3. When prompted, select the backup file you created earlier

Make sure there is no error restoring the file before you go and factory reset the amp.

FACTORY RESET

To access this feature:

1. Turn off the amp, then turn the amp back on while holding the Exit button.
2. The amp will briefly light both the Save and Exit buttons.
3. Once they are no longer lit, the restore is complete.

Please be sure to back up any data (custom Presets) that you have created prior to performing this operation as all old data will be overwritten with the Restore.

TO RESTORE THE BACKUP TO THE AMP

1. Connect the amp to the computer
2. In Fender Fuse, click the UTILITIES menu and select Restore...
3. When prompted, select the backup file you created earlier

Note: it's not a bad idea to store a copy of the file on some other device just in case there are problems with your backup file.

THANKS Ghost. I'll tackle this in a day or two when my mind is fresher...good luck with that! I left the amp powered on overnight a few days ago and the problem MAY have started after that? Not sure? Somehow it doesn't make sense that leaving the amp on for a full 18 hours would cause any heat (or other?) related problems to develop? Surely, that can't be it? Regardless, I'm thinking that I should re-boot the amp (by restoring the factory pre-sets)? Hopefully that will resolve the problem IF it's as simple as that?

You definitely have nothing to lose by trying (as long as you have that backup).

Tried everything...nothing worked! C'est la vie. I was able to back up my pre-sets to Fuse and "reboot" but the amp just won't deliver any sound. Powers up just fine but no sound. Plugged an iPod into the aux. input but no sound. No sound out of the headphones either. Guess I better spring for an inexpensive used Mustang III. Spoke with Fender support. They said my stored pre-sets can be downloaded to any Mustang III (IV or V). No biggie. Thanks Ghost and others weighing in.

sorry to hear that. You could probably get a few $$ selling that 12" celestion speaker. Use it toward the purchase of the replacement. If the speaker still works that is.
