Hello, I'm new to Fender. I recently ordered a Hot Rod Deluxe IV and I'm curious what the thing is in the back of my amp covered in a leather cloth. I was wondering if it could be removed for more space. Is it a piece of wood for stability or something?

Thanks!

"Space" for what????

Storing stuff in the back of a combo amp is a great way to damage a speaker.

That's what gig bags are for.

Yup.
Just yank real hard on it.
With a strong enough yank you can bust it right outa there.
And those glass thingamajigs in there?
Yard those out too.
None of that stuff is necessary.
God only knows whose bright idea it was to put that junk in there.

Seriously, you’re joking, right?
You wanna start pulling components out your brand new amp?

Cool thanks for all the wonderful replies. I followed BMW KTM's advice and just ripped it out. Now there's plenty of space for my amp cover! I'll definitely be back for more useful information laden with unnecessary snark in the future.

Well, you did ask.
That's all on you.
When you leave an opening 50 miles wide you have to expect someone might take you up on it.

I don't think anyone's trying to be mean or snarky. I think some wonder if your question was serious or you're just having some fun. Assuming you are serious, yanking out that thing will eliminate your reverb. You surely see there are wires attached to it. Right?

Ya, my first "real" amp was a Peavey Deuce and I thought the leather bag was to stow cables and such until I found the wires when I tried to open it.
I stored my cables and pedals back there, with my folding guitar stand stuck across the speakers. Same on my Stage Lead 212. Never once damaged a cone until my 4x10 tipped over and punctured the 12" in my Carvin X100 in the back of my pickup 15 years ago.
I finally picked up a replacement for that speaker on Carvin's liquidation a couple of months ago.

Yes, it was a sincere question. I didn't think I'd have to indicate that. My bad. The first response answered my question sufficiently when he indicated that it was my reverb tank. My intention wasn't to sacrifice something like a reverb tank for more space. That's precisely why I asked the question. Also, no, any wires that are connected are well hidden and I didn't notice them.

To completely evade any notion of misunderstanding on your part is an interesting way of interpreting our exchange. Obviously, I disagree. The reason why I asked my question was so that I didn't begin to do something regrettable. I think a better tactic when answering a newbie's question is to not presume that he or she wants a facetious answer, regardless of how ignorant the question may be.

Thanks for the response, Rich. I'm surprised you were able to keep so much stuff back there! My goal was only the amp cover. Then again, it did ship with the footswitch and cable in the back so it can't be that terrible if I want to put that in there as well.

Nobody here is trying to bust your balls, pal. We trying to help you have a lengthy and satisfying relationship with your new amp. Matt ("BMW-KTM") has been around for quite a while and has personally witnessed many of the same bone-headed blunders as me and I myself have been cleaning up other peoples' amp messes for over forty-five years. I've literally seen it all and those mistakes kept my repair bench full for many decades. So holster your dick and listen to what we're trying to tell you. And don't forget -- in a few years it'll be you helping the newbies. As to your specific intent to store an amp cover in the back of your amp, that's *probably* hokay. Fold it up and lay it gently in the bottom of the cab. If the footswitch uses a velcro strap to secure it to the inside of the cab, use it. But avoid tossing other stuff (extra cables, stompboxes, empty Jack Daniels bottles, etc) in there.

Well... the pedal storage back there stopped when I got my Morley Wah/Volume. Before that I only had an Aria compressor and DOD Chorus. Once I got the Morley, I built a pedalboard from an old kitchen cabinet door. My old amp was a Peavey Deuce 212, and later the Fender Stage Lead 212, same size as a Twin Reverb, so there was plenty of room back there for cables and a couple of pedals.

But I wouldn't store anything back there when playing, especially the amp cover, as it would tend to alter the tone (even though it's an open-back cabinet). I rolled up my amp covers and put them in the guitar case when playing, but eventually I started using a soft bag like a canvas "weekender" bag for the misc items like cables, tools, spare strings... always carried a Shure mic because you never knew when you'd need it.

But ya, probably best to just pick up a backpack for cables and the cover.

Honestly, I figured there was a 90% chance this was somebody goofing.
It was too preposterous to take seriously so I replied sarcastically for the sake of a chuckle.

It’s not like I NEVER bust anybody’s balls.
It does happen once in a while.
I try to be helpful when I can when people are honestly looking for help.
When someone is joking I play along and usually take it up a notch. (Like here)
When they’re being a $@!&#*% that’s when I might bust a ball or two.

There were no ball busting intentions in my original post.

Maybe just a little bit after the confronting response.

just remember there are guitar players of ALL AGES on this forum. Some wouldn't know a reverb tank from a sandwich bag. Let's not scare them off.

also, there are adult beginners who would rather ask a question on the forum for the actual company than roll the dice and try a Google search. Google has all the answers; the right ones and the wrong ones too. Let's give them the informed answers they seek.

lastly, we have the seniors who have taken up guitar in their old age since now they have time for such things. They might not know what they are doing yet, and they might be a little slower to pick it up, but they are having fun. Lets not pee in their Cheerios.
