Hello folks
I play my single coil Tele through my VOX AC15 . Although I have taken my amp elsewhere, I don't have a "hum" issue like I do at my home.

Is there an inexpensive way to suppress the hum?

I live in an old home, so I am pretty sure it has to do with the old circuitry in the house.

Thanks for your time!

Probably a bad (or missing) ground, likely have some loose neutral connections as well.

Call a sparky and pay him to go through and check/update everything. It could prevent a fire.

+1

A wise course of action.

In the interim, a Furman power conditioner may provide transitory relief.

House ground is for safety ot the user, not to prevent fire.

reno2atlanta,

Nothing you can do except to add a ground to your house outlet . Ask to a electrician.

But a loose neutral (or any connection) can and will eventually start a fire.
If the house is so old that it does not have safety grounding, then all junctions should be inspected for security and for signs of overheating.
Same as any loose or discolored wall receptacles should be replaced.

From a ground problem and arrive at a fire risk, personally it is not in my fears.

One more time.

In addition to a fire risk, a loose neutral CAN cause hum issues in an amplifier.

He has an older home, that obviously has an issue with the wiring. He needs to have a qualified electrician inspect the wiring in the home, BOTH to help eliminate the hum issue and to reduce the risk of fire.

No sweat, Rich......they do things a bit differently up there in Quebec. Likely due to their superior European heritage.

(you do recollect that it's a *French* flag planted on the moon, right?)

Thanks guys!

And Arjay . . . its always great to get your response too. I have a buddy who is an electrician. The hum could be worse. When I move away from the amp, the hum has less presence, yet you can still hear it . . . not as much.

My 1st tube amp and disappointed by the "hum" . . . I have gotten use to it though.

Hmm.... Have you checked it without your cell phone on your belt?

Hmmm, if you unplug the guitar lead from the amp does it still hum?
Does the hum increase with the volume?
Have you tried rotating the amp to face different directions and does the volume of the hum change when you do?

Have you tried moving to another room in your house? Maybe your getting interference from TV, computer monitor, cordless phone, etc.
