I bought an Acoustasonic 40 and was very impressed, so figured the 90 would be even better, with more volume. I just received the 90 and it is not as powerful as the 40. I get significantly more volume out of the 40, both with electric guitar and vocals than I do with the 90. Is this normal, or is my 90 defective? I can send either or both amps back for a full refund. I did read some reviews of the 90 indicating it is not as powerful as the 90 watts would suggest.

Thanks for any insights or suggestions!

A follow-up to my post. I went to a music store and tried a 90 and had the same result. So mine was not defective. The 90's just don't seem to put out a lot of volume for 90 watts. I ended up returning it. It's a shame because other than the volume issue it's a great amp!

I've heard the same thing. I use a Fishman Loudbox Mini . Why not go and get one of those ? They are IMO, the best Acoustic amp going today.

The 40 has a ac rating of 130 watts. The 90 sports a 310 watt tag. The power is there.
The difference is how the amp uses its power. The gain structure of most acoustic amps is low, falling in the same range as bass amps. This allows the acoustic balance of fundamental to harmonics to be preserved.
Raising the gain is electric guitar territory. It exaggerates the peaks and cuts sustain. This is the tradeoff. You can't get both. So the 90 probably has better sustain than the 40. And even though its not as punchy, it probably makes a better living room amp.
The 90 also runs a horn. This would trade off volume for sparkle. In a gigging situation, the 40's twin 6.5" speakers are a much better fit, The horn would get lost in a crowd where it would be fine in an apartment. The higher gain 40 would make a better live presentation, while the lower gain 90 would be for the living room purist.
This is where marketing from the factories fails the consumer. If they would publish actual specifications, a sensitivity rating would describe the difference in gain structure with a simple number. But they market on gloss, not substance. Thank you all for starting this conversation to help others figure out the differences.

I recently changed from a Fishman to a Fender Acoustic 100 and the way these amps are made , if you're using a Acoustic that has a passive ( Clip on ) pick up, then the volume out put is going to be weak. using a guitar with a pre-amp/ active pickup will generate the volume/wattage that is advertised in these amps. Hope this helps.
