Hi all, I am new here and would really appreciate some help and advice.
I have a DRRI that has recently developed a fault that I am struggling to fix.
When I turn the reverb up it hums increasingly loudly and it wasn't previously like this.
The reverb does actually work but with the addition of the overbearing hum.
If I turn OFF all the controls on the amp except the reverb and with no guitar cable inserted into the jack it still hums.
If I switch off the foot switch it stops humming, if I unplug the foot switch it starts to hum again.
If I unplug the reverb tank from the chassis it still hums.
I have changed both V3 and V4 and they make no difference.
I also changed the rectifier tube just in case with no difference.
I have looked inside the chassis to see if there are any fried components and there don't appear to be.
Please can someone give me some more ideas to try.
All the things I have tried I have read on other posts as I don't have any technical knowledge although I do understand all the dangers of working on equipment with high voltages.
Many thanks,
Paul.

Try know good tubes in V1 and V6

The tube you try in V3, V4 are good ? You must be sure
You can use them in V1, V2

Or you could have filter cap issue ; bad / broken solder or bad filter cap

I actually tried four different brand new tubes in both V3 and V4. I haven't tried V1 and V6 but will do.
How would I identify the filter cap?
Thanks, Paul.

Solder are under the circuit board, you have to remove the circuit board from the chassis ; big job and for expert only ; lethal voltage there all the time.

This is not a 65 DR RI filter caps, you amp should look close.

That is strange all I get on Safari, Firefox and Chrome is a white box with flickr in the corner and an x in the middle with the message 'this photo is no longer available'.

:D
That is better I can see the picture now. I see what you mean that it would be a difficult job to change them.
I will try changing V1 and V6 as you suggest first and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks, Paul.

My error is to try to keep private some information about my Flickr account.

On a "new " amp, filter caps should'nt be bad, maybe broken solder under the board. :(

More chance is a tubes issue

How old is this amp? Did you acquire it new or used?

Fender started making these around 1994, so if it was made that long ago, it could easily be a filter or bypass cap.

Since this and the reverb control seem to be the only things that affect the hum, it would suggest that everything is not tickety boo (Don't get a chance to use that word much) in this area:

Spot on.
Or tube socket.

Cheers :)

Actually a year earlier. My DRRI dates to early autumn of 1993, with the trannies stamped for the 33rd, 34th, and 36th week of that year.

I bought the amp new about 7 maybe 8 years ago and it has only had light home use, with long periods of no use at all while I am using other amps.
I have just tried changing all of the valves one at a time including the 6V6s just to see if anything changed and it didn't make any difference at all.
If I turn the reverb off the amp sounds and works just as it used to. The reverb does work when turned up but with the added annoying hum, anything over 2 on the reverb control is to hummy.
Thanks, Paul.
