Hey there,

Bought a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb from my local guitar store yesterday. Sounded excellent in store, however I took it home and it just sounds dead. Like really dead, none of that clean Fender tone it should have. Turning up the volume past 3 just makes the sound so muddy that it's unlistenable.

Switched on and set clean you get that tube amp hiss that sounds like air blowing, but it's really prominent. Engaging the reverb gives you an electrical hum that's impossible to ignore. Engaging the tremolo just makes the amp sound like a steam train is approaching.

Given the amp sounded great in store, and at my friend's house where I showed him, I'm thinking it's the electrics in my house that are the issue - most likely ground wire issues. It also made me realise my last Fender tube amp sounded better outside of my house. The house is quite old but some parts have been recently redeveloped, not sure what the wiring situation is but hoping to find out tomorrow.

Do the symptoms described sound like it's an electrics issue? If so, what do I do from here - is there a fix or is my house just destined to be poor for amps?

It sounds like it could be a grounding issue with the house wiring.
Low voltage would tend to cause an earlier breakup, but not a buzz or hiss.
It could also be a loose neutral. I would call in an electrician and tell him that you suspect there is a grounding issue.

It could be that when the outlets were upgraded to 3-prong, they were not properly grounded. My parent's house was built in 1952 and it was built with 2-prong outlets.

That’s my first thought as well.

if the house outlets are indeed the problem, you might have better results with a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). A high quality UPS will isolate the amp from the house electric, because the house electric charges the batteries in the UPS, and the amp runs off the batteries.

If the ground is indeed missing, not much that will help until that is fixed.

Look is a ground issue.
