Hi all!

Can I use my TRRI as a cabinet? I want to buy a new amp and because of lack of space and more significantly because it's less expensive, I want to buy a head.

Is there any reason why I should avoid using the combo as a cabinet? If there isn't one, is there anything I should look out for?

Many thanks!

Be sure not to power up any amplifier without a load on it unless it is expressly stated in the operating manual that it is OK to do so. It’s rare so you may never encounter one that can see no load.

Be sure to match the impedance of the cabinet to the amplifier.

Have fun.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Because I've seen people ask if they can plug a head into the input of their combo amp and have the head's power go to the speakers as long as they don't turn the combo amp on -- no you can't do it that way.

The speaker wire has a plug that connects to a jack on the TRRI. You have to unplug that from the TRRI and plug it into the output of the head.

(Apologies if you know that and that's what you were planning to do -- but I really have seen people ask that question.)

Along that line, the TRRI's speaker wire may not have enough extra slack to reach the head's output jack. Depends on the location of the head's output jack. Several easy ways to deal with that -- just think about it when selecting the head and plan in advance. So you don't unbox the head and excitedly go to plug it in, then discover the wire doesn't reach.
-------------------
Some heads don't have 4 ohm outputs. You could rewire the TRRI's speakers in series for 16 ohms, but you probably don't want to have to rewire every time.
-------------------
The TRRI's speakers will work with any amp that has a 4 ohm output and is rated at 100 watts or less. (A 1 watt head will easily drive the TRRI's speakers -- obviously not as loud.)

But if you're looking at a Marshall, Orange, Vox head, the TRRI's American-voiced speakers won't give you the full experience like British-voiced speakers will. Not necessarily bad, just not the traditional voicing.

Should be very good with any head that's normally matched with American-voiced speakers.

That's all that matters.
