68 Princeton Custom Reverb reissue does not breakup and has weak bass. The only thing I changed was my speaker to a Celestion G10N-40. Any help would be great. :?:

Thanks.

Have never been able to get mine to break up either. I put a tube screamer in front of it and that works good enough.

I find that this amp just can not handle high input volumes from the guitar. When my strat is at 10 and the amp is above 2 the amp vibrates when ever I play any A to C notes on the low E string. Very frustrating to deal with on a new $900 amp.

Have you experienced this problem?

Paulie105, you've started another thread about the rattle/buzz/vibration. Let's keep this thread on topic about lack of breakup.

As a non master volume amp, the only way to get distortion is with high output volume.

That's volume, not the amp's knob setting. If you turn your amp's volume to 10 but turn your guitar down to 2 or 3, the sound will be clean.

With single-coil pickups turned to 10, the amp should start to distort around 5 or 6 and be singing at 7 to 8.

With humbuckers, or with a boost pedal with single-coils, it should start breaking up around 4 and be pretty dirty at 6.

While it's marketed as an amp that distorts at lower, friendlier volumes, they're talking about band/stage volumes. Perfect for bars and small clubs.

But still very loud at home.
--------------
The speaker change shouldn't affect that. But if the speaker is more efficient than the original, that means you'll have to play even louder for distortion.

Weak bass is either because the speaker needs to break-in and loosen up with many hours of high volume (or many, many, many hours of low volume), or the speaker is possibly defective.

Rickvl, if you've turned your amp way up and it stays clean, it's possible you have a weak/failing preamp tube.

Even brand new tubes sometimes fail. If the tube is getting worse that could also explain the weak bass -- it's possible the tube just coincidentally got worse about the same time you replaced the speaker.

Was the breakup better before the speaker change?

Btw, your amp is not a “reissue”. Never was, never will be.
