You have to consider the Volume AND the Master pots, as well as the tone pots. If you have the Volume and tone controls cranked, the Master might seem "touchy", although I have no problem with mine.

Since you are playing clean at lower volume, no need to turn the Volume up so high, that will lean towards more driven sounds. Turn the Volume pot down, say 2, and then turn up the Master. With the tone controls, start with them all to about 4 or 5, then if you want more bass for example, turn the treble down instead of turning the bass up. For less bass, turn down the mids, increase the treble. This is the general idea anyway.

Learning to use the controls might take some time, but it makes a big difference in how the amp sounds. The BJr can go from loud and gnarly, to soft and sweet.

Thank you very much for the Very helpful tips for the controls. I will try and experiment what you suggested tonight.

No problem. Glad you are enjoying your amp. It should sound great with your pedal. :D

Just a wee update - I have been thoroughly enjoying the BJr with various EQ set up. It sounded good on day 1 but it does sound better now. Maybe the speaker has been broken in? I have not played it loud though.

I am a tone junky for no real goal (I am a home alone player:), so ordered the basic mod kit along with some other parts through Billm. I am a mechanical guy so my friend who is an electrical tech by trade will perform the mod on my amp. It has been a couple of weeks with no delivery. I have contacted them with ETA question but no reply. I wonder if they are still in biz. Their web site is still up and took my order though.

Does anyone know the status of their biz?

Cheers

^^^^^ Curious as well.
I have an original MIA Junior and am considering the mods.
Bill passed away last year, and the site was closed for a while, but apparently the family re-opened the site and it does appear they are still in business.

Sorry to bring this old thread up again but I finally got the Billm mod parts in (it took about 10 business days) and installed them this week. One word = OMG. The amp sounds crazy good. Fuller with more defined bass and the EQ has a much wider responsive range for adjustment. I am super happy that I pulled the trigger.

A friend of mine came over with his Blues Deluxe (w/ a Vintage 30). I did not feel jealous about this amp. Two different animals and I prefer the sound from the BJr with the mod.

I will stick with the factory speaker until GAS hits me good :)

Mod:
Basic mod
Presence control
Master volume pod
TO20

PS: I am purely mechanical by trade. Am lucky enough to have a colleague who builds guitars and amps by himself so he took care of the mod in 3 hours.

I bought Princeton 68 reissue for 40th birthday and kept it for 9 months for some reason couldn't get on with it. Exchanged for a brand new blues junior 4 and I must say it is amazing. Master plus volume allows you to get some grit without annoying anyone, or you can get it clean with volume low.
It is always a matter of opinion and preference but I have enjoyed playing the bj4 more in the last month than any other amp I have had.
Got a visual sounds vs xo premium drive pedal, along with a boss DS1, ventura vibe and obscura delay and the bj4 makes them sound awesome.
The noise level on the amp is excellent, only thing I did notice was a rattle which turned out to be the chicken head for reverb pot, screw needed tightening as did a few others.
Amp is completely stock and see no reason to change anything and at under £600 it is incredible.
Good for practice, night time noodling, jamming and I am sure could cope with a small too medium gig. For £1200 you could have 2 for a large gig.
I have no connection to fender but every contact I have had with support has also been super helpful, so your also getting that peace of mind.
Best of luck with what ever choice you make.

Awesome Rotter89!

The '68 Custom amps are not reissues, they are "Vintage Modified" series of amps. I haven't cared for any of them, and calling them "reissues" doesn't change them one bit.
