Hi- I'm looking for some help diagnosing a problem with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Amp powers on, but drive, more drive do not engage. In addition, if I plug the effects loop in, all output cuts out. I'm figuring the two are related. Today, I plugged a guitar in and the drive worked initially, but cut out again 1-2 minutes of playing. I need to get this fixed and am wondering if anyone has seen these symptoms before. All tubes light up, btw.

Thanks,

Rich

Hello Rich,

Let me throw this out there.... it seems I'm always giving the same advice.. :) simply because this tip fixes a multitude of problems in the HRD's...

I would resolder all the solder joints on the PCB for the tube sockets. You can check them and I'll bet that one or more have hairline cracks in the joints. Even if you dont see them, reflow some solder on anyway. Dont keep the iron to long though... just enough to heat the solder. The HRD series amps seem to have this problem. And the tube bases are very easy to get to....

The other thing to check is those two large 16vdc 5 watt resistors that are mounted on the PCB next to the bias pot. They are marked R78 and R79 on the board. Depending on the age of the amp, they may be 330 ohms or the newer amps, Fender changed them to 470 ohm. You are looking to see if they or the area around the board looks burned or scourched. if those are bad, you could loose the drive/more drive. They may have loose solder joints. The bad thing is the board needs to be removed to get to the back of those if they are damaged. Since you say that it has come back and then stopped working, it sounds like a bad solder joint possibly.

The other thing could be the little relay that controls the drive switch....

I'm not sure any of this will help, but its a start.

good luck! :D
