Today I was using my HRD version II at low to moderate volumes on the clean channel and after a few minutes after warming up it cut itself in half volume wise and began sounding fizzy/fuzzy. I immediately turned it off & tried it through an extension speaker, unplugging the on board Cannabis Rex. After a few minutes it did the volume cut again, this time without the fizz, any ideas? I do also use a Carl's Guitar Volume Box in the efx loop. And that may contribute to extra tube wear (perhaps) Any advice appreciated. DBM.....

You must check all tubes first.

You triggered the 2 Minute Rule.
That is, if it plays for 2 minutes then craps out, its a tube.
Much like a car with a plugged radiator, it will run cold, but when it gets up to temp, bad things happen.
The HRDX has other heating problems that can appear, but check the preamp tubes with a substitute first

Thanks TimsAudio & stratele52, I have a new set of tubes on the way, some other folks think it may be transformer as now if I turn it on, I get a buzzing sound, have not tried to play it yet until I get the tubes.

No, it's not the transformer. That would blow fuses.
I'm betting on V3.

Hopefully V3 is the answer, it is at the post office, but I got there too late to get it from the window. Tomorrow and we shall see. Thanks for your replies.

If it is not V3 it must be one or more resistor connected at V3. It was the issue with a HRD I fix few years ago.

It is not the tubes I tried the new ones and decided to sell the amp as is. and get something lighter in weight.

Maybe another Super Champ? Bummer about the HRD.

Local Fender repair shop says 50 bucks to bench test it. If I can't sell it for my asking price I will take it there for a look see, and maybe some mods like an audio taper volume pot on the clean channel, and maybe a mute the highs a bit on the drive channel if it ain't too costly. And probably get a cap job if that ain't too costly.

Why mods or caps job , this look not the issue.

I think a cap job would help in long term reliability if he uses better quality parts than the standard ones that came with the amp, and the mods I want done are ones that I wanted done since I bought the amp. While it is in the shop it may cost a little less than 2 trips to the shop. That all depends on the price of the repair and the price of the mods.
