New forum member here. I am looking for a SS amp with excellent clean tones that plays well with effects, for ambient/shoegaze-type tones, basically as a budget Roland JC-120 alternative. One of the most common recommendations is the Princeton Chorus, particularly the USA-made models from the late 80s and early-mid 90s. Here are my questions:

1.) Which one? Red knob or black? I haven't been able to find much information talking about the differences in tone between the two. Again, I am only looking for cleans. I have tube amps and/or pedals for dirt.

2.) My last solid-state amp was a Peavey Bandit. I could run direct into the effects return rather than into the normal input, bypassing the preamp if I used a modeling pedal or whatever. Is this possible with the Princeton Chorus? With the stereo effects loop, I could see this being really useful, running out of a stereo reverb or delay pedal.

Thanks for any replies!

The earlier black ones were made in USA. That's what I have. It's sounds good to me, but I've never played a red knob.

Yes you can do this. The stereo effects return is a standard TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) stereo jack. Depending on how your modeling pedal outputs a signal you might be able to use a regular TRS-TRS cable or need a breakout cable (TRS stereo to two mono).

I tried it with my Zoom G3X and it sounded good but I lost interest after a short time.

The Red Knob and Black Knob are the same amp. The red knob came first and was manufactured in Lake Oswego Oregon (Serial number should start with LO-XXXX). These were and are sought after amps as they have great sound and are built very well. Very reliable. Made in the late 80s early 90s and were quite flexible amps, came with 2x10 Eminence Speakers. Also had a footswitch with Channel Select, Reverb/Delay, and of course Chorus/Modulation.

A demo attached...this is the Black Knob version, but they are identical feature wise.
