I use JJ Tubes from Eurotubes http://www.eurotubes.com/store/pc/home.asp in my HR Deluxe. I also BIAS them myself using the videos from Eurotubes. I have had this set in for some years and it sounds great. I have absolutely no financial interest in Eurotubes I just like the way they do business with great advice when I call or e-mail them.

Are you talking about all tubes, 12XX7s and 6L6s ?

6L6 won't change tone ( can you ear it ?) I use JJ's. Bias adjustment , yes for better to worse.
12XX7; sky is the limit in choice.

In V1 you may ear something in tone

Thought about using a 5751, 12AT7, or 12AY7 in V1?

I’m trying to remember.
I’m certain that at some point over the years I would have had to change power tubes on a 6L6 amp (and maybe a few times) but it’s been quite a number of years since I owned a 6L6 amp.
I can’t recall the last time and if I noticed anything or not.
I can say with certainty that when I swapped the EL34s in my Rivera that there was a remarkable difference.
Like the sort of difference you’d expect with a speaker change.
A different voice.
I also know that I have heard differences in 6V6 amps, although admittedly not as pronounced as the Rivera.
I just retubed the power stage in my 50 watt Boogie and noticed no change at all. (4 X EL84)
Is there some kind of rule of thumb I should have learned about by now but didn’t?

There is only one acceptable set of tubes for a HRDvl, the ones that I use, lol.

Seriously though, a JJ 5751 in V1, practically any 12AX7 in V2, any quality 12AT7 in V3, and a pair of GT 6L6 GE output tubes. At least this is what I use in the HRDvl and HRDlx.

The 5751 and 12AT7 will help smooth out the drive channel, while maintaining a powerful clean sound.

If you replace old power tubes with bias change over the years with any good new tubes and right bias you could ( not sure without A/B test ) ear difference.

It is not only the new tubes or the brand, it is also the bias.

But I'm sure you guys know that !

Good point stratele52, definitely check/set bias with change in output tubes.
