I bought this amp because I really wanted something with a lot of clean headroom. That way I could use various overdrive and distortion pedals to get a nice range of crunchy tones. So far though, I’m finding that the amp just does not take drive pedals well.

All of the modulation effects and time-based stuff sounds great. But the crunch pedals are sorely lacking. Here’s what I’ve tried:

Fulltone OCD, Sans Amp RK5, Friedman BE-OD, Zvex Fuzz Factory.

Thus far, none of them sound “good”. Keep in mind, I’m going for a Rock, Hard-Rock, Fusion style. Nothing any more chunky than Van Halen “Brown Sound”. Not Metal. Think Holdsworth or Al Dimeola, or Santana.

I got somewhat decent results with a Boss Super-overdrive. I just wish it had slightly more gain.

Overall it feels like the speaker is just refusing to breakup in a way that sounds rockin’ if that makes sense. It just does not like these OD pedals.

I guess I may need a new speaker but man I hate spending the extra cash when I just bought this thing. I do want to try a Xotic Soul Driven but I can’t afford it just yet.

Are there any tips or tricks you guys would recommend to make the amp more “dirt pedal friendly”?

Thanks.

Hi Jamesrohr1,

Are you using the effects loop? Generally speaking, time based effects sound better in the loop than distortion effects, and distortion effects sound better in the amp input.

I use the FX loop but only for Time based FX. The OD/Distortion goes in the front of the amp.

Go ahead and plug the guitar into the pedal then directly into the loop for good midrange dirt.
A Fender tone stack does its own thing to process tone. Your pedal tones won't go through without being modified by the tone stack.
It's like driving a car with two transmissions, one affecting the other.
When you go directly into the loop, you will notice a touch sensitivity.
If your pedal tone controls won't get you there, a small EQ pedal downstream will set it right.

To clarify, you're saying that I shouldn't plug my guitar into the pedal then into the amp input, but rather plug my guitar into the pedal then into the FX loop return? Are you sure?

Tonebone classic tube distortion pedal. Lots of Santana like overdrives, all kinds of tonal options. Plug your guitar into the pedal, from pedal to amp input. Set your EQ's on the amp for your favorite clean tone, adjust the Tonebone for your dirt options and off you go into tonal heaven.

The Tonebone classic is almost exactly like my 2 discontinued Nady TD1 units). Best overdrive tones I ever got. Tube amp like overdrives with all the under and overtones of power tube overdrive at bedroom levels and on up. I plug my guitar into the Nady's then into my Hot Rod Deluxe or Egnater Tweaker 15 watt head amp input. I set the amp tone controls to get the nicest deep cleans, and then the Nady's to give me real Santana like overdrives. It works excellently. I recommend the Tonebone because the Nady's are discontinued and the Tonebone Classic uses the same circuits, as Tonebone bought the design from the original designer who had licensed the design to Nady then sold it to Tonebone.

Dirt pedals are midrange dominant. The Fender tone stack is good for treble and bass. It will not pass your pedal signal well.
Yes, plug your guitar into the pedal and the pedal into the return. Only your head will explode.
