Hi there,

I love my SFX II amp but was bummed and embarrassed when it just cut off the other night twice during a gig. Then a couple of times it did a terrible crackling noise and turned off. By off I mean no sound but power still on. After turning power off after a couple of minutes sound would come back on. The issue is overheating that a couple of folks pointed to in reviews here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/fender-acoustasonic-sfx-ii-acoustic-guitar-combo-amp

I bought a computer fan on Amazon for $16 and installed it inside on the amp blowing cool air in. It was this -> AC Infinity AXIAL 8038, Muffin Cooling Fan, 115V AC 80mm by 80mm by 38mm Low Speed .

I just took the amp head out (note the speaker wire colors when you unhook them), and drilled some additional vent holes and bolted the fan in. I tied a loop in the power wire and used a snap tie to secure it.

You can hear the gentle whir of the fan but there is absolutely no fan or electrical noise coming through the speaker - which I was worried about.

I will let you know how this stands up to stress at another 'hot' show. For home use I have only had it cut off a couple of times in several years so it is only when there is really a load on it in a warm setting.

I know these amps are no longer made but hopefully if you own one or find a used one this might help you if you get this overheating issue. Better than a $95 bench charge from a tech that will tell you nothing is wrong.

thanks,

Willie

Nice mod.

To me, as the picture of output power transistor show, heat sink look under speck for a 2 X 80 watts amp.

It is cheaper to add a fan than to replace the heat sink
