I have a reissue '65 Princeton Reverb which is generally rather nice, and all I need to play at home, but one thing bugs me. When I play treble strings and higher up the neck, I hear an overtone that is "shrill," at least to my ears, and is always more evident with the in-between Tele or Strat positions. I thought it might be reverb related, as I always have a little reverb on, but turning that off doesn't stop it and that overtone is still there.
I wonder if anyone else has encountered this, and found the cause of it.

It has to do with the between sound on a Strat or Tele. It happens on my Strat style guitar as well. It also happens on my Ibanez RG321.

One of the things that I do is; turn off the presence all the way. I also use a Carl's guitar volume box in the effects loop. I turn that down one quarter of the way and it cuts down on the shrill as well as the pick attack.

Do you have a speaker cab or different amp with an 8 ohm speaker? Unplug the internal speaker, run the amp through the ext. cab, etc., and see what happens. Just make sure you always have a speaker plugged in before you turn the amp on.

I don't have an available speaker cab, but I tried it with a hooked up spare speaker, and it did seem to tame some of the overtones I hear. However, I'm not sure if it is the stock speaker or the amp's cab that might be creating this.

It could be the stock speaker or a tube that doesn't care for vibration. You're headed in the right direction.
