I recently got a used Hot Rod Deluxe and have a Carl's volume box attenuator that goes into the effects loop. I never used the loop before getting the attenuator but I noticed a significant loss in sound quality when hooking it up. I only use the clean channel, but it sounded like there was drive on it and very compressed. I contacted Carl and he asked me what happened when I just plugged cables into the loop without anything else, and I had a similar drop in sound quality. Compressed and breaking up a lot. I know the cables are good so that leaves me wondering what's wrong with the effects loop.

In bypass mode, the loop is passive.
In use, a pair of op amp circuits is switched in for buffering.
This limits sound quality. An upgrade to a TLE2072 is a good improvement.

No doubt that's a great suggestion from Tim. I wouldn't think the sound should be degraded that much?
Don't forget to check the +/- 16 V supply that the op amps use.

+1

A wise precaution.

The more robust TLE2072 with its superior slew rate should sound audibly better when time-based pedals (chorus, flange, delay, etc.) are inserted via the effects loop.
