Thinking of buying a Fender stage 112se second hand and have been trying it out for a while but there are two snags I wish to sort out before doing so. They could be caused by the same problem but I doubt it

I'm using a voicelive 3 extreme and there is a hum from the PA when the amp is connected to the voicelive. on the Voicelive as you probably know the Amp earth and the PA earth are connected through the guitar lead and Mic lead so the hum must be an earth loop which I can get rid of with a ground loop isolator. with my old amp, I never had the problem. Just wondered whether this is a typical problem with this amp. disconnecting the earth mains wire on the chassis removed the hum completely. Obviously I wont use it like this.

The other oddness it that on the clean channel, if the three tone controls are turned fully anticlockwise then there is no sound from the amp even if the volume is turned up. On the dirty channel this isn't the case. The three tone controls on the clean channel all work in that they change the tone, however the Bass control only needs to be on a fraction to give loads of bass. I am thinking that there is something wrong with the tone circuitry. I found a schematic on the web and it looks reasonably simple but before doing anything I want to be sure that it shouldnt be like this. I have had a look at the circuit board and it all looks good - no bulging or leaking capacitors. So is this tone strangeness how it should be?

Thanks for reading and hopefully replying

The clean channel tone control is working properly. This is normal operation for most Fender tone stacks. This is R14,15,16.
The gain channel uses a different type of tone circuit and is cleaner to handle overdriven signals. It too, is probably working correctly. For less bass try turning the contour control.
The Ground loop can be addressed with 3-prong to 2-prong AC adaptors. As long as you have one good ground at the amp, the audio cables will provide a safe AC ground for the other equipment.

Lord almighty...where did you find this heavy amp hanging out  I still have mine after buying it new 25yrs ago...these days it hangs out at band practice on a permanent basis. A great stage amp with righteous tone & volume and loves pedals. It's OD Chanel is really good on its own in my opinion :) Hope it works out for you....I'm not familiar with your setup you described. I use a Zoom multi effects pedal with this amp..right into imput 1 and it sings all nite long :D

+1

I used a similar set up live for a number of years. The old Stage-series models were some of the best built and best sounding solid-state amps that Fender ever made.

These are some of the finest SS amps Fender has made. They were derived from the "Fast Four" red knob amps designed by Mark Wentling right after Fender went through their buyout. These were the first SS amps Fender ever really had success with. Some very good tones and they eventually changed the cosmetics over to this black knob look.
