Personally, I love the "big hair" tortured overdrive sound of the '80s. I enjoy a plain, clean, linear boost as well. And once in a while a genuine fuzz effect is a welcome treat. Unfortunately I've never seen all three of these tones done authentically in a single boost pedal. I keep hoping though.

Oh it's out there, It's called the Mermaid overdrive. Extremely hard to find and very elusive. Why some even claim it doesn't exist at all.

To the op, congrats on your OCD. It's a great pedal that is very flexible. I will run it with the hp switch engaged for a more raw sound and boost in volume. The lp mode is less volume but a smoother drive sound. If you're able to run your amp at high volumes and just boost it with the OCD, drive all the way down and level all the way up, hang on to your socks!

The Mermaid was a limited run pedal made by VFE in Seattle.
It was a type of Klon Centaur clone (Klone) with a little more control over the EQ by having separate bass and treble controls instead of a single tone control.
It was an experimental pedal made by their R&D department which went by a different name.
They replaced it with a regular production run pedal called the Merman, which has also been discontinued.
It took the tone shaping control a little further and also allowed some compression control as well.

The Fulltone Catalyst is a pedal that blends OD and Fuzz in one box.
I had one and I tried to like it but it ultimately got sold.

Update:
Apparently the Catalyst has also been discontinued.

Fulltone Catalyst

Perhaps it's your holy grail pedal, Arjay.
They were selling them as recently as last year.
You could prolly find one still.

You know, I tried one of those about three or four years ago but I couldn't get the "fuzz" to sound right. I was searching for that Vox Tonebender vibe but it just wasn't there. And no, my pockets aren't deep enough to spend several hundred $$$ for an original JMI pedal. The quest for the silver chalice continues......

Have you ever had a chance to try his distortion pro? I owned one back in the day and I remember it being able to do overdrive, distortion and fuzz depending on settings. It's similiar to the zvex fuzz factory in that it has a total of 6 knobs for tweaking.

I eventually sold it but I think that they are inexpensive enough that one could afford to play with it and see what it can bring to the table. It usually resells for what you pay for it, so it's not that big of a risk to try it out.

Just thought I'd share.
:)

I had the original '70 (large sloped box) and it was pretty hairy but I found I liked the softer '69 better.

I use an OCD and love it. I play a lot of 60's-70's-80's classic rock, and Blues. I 'm using a 58 LP Reissue, and a stock Strat HDD American Deluxe with humbucker / P/U in the bridge position.

Started with a 9 volt power supply and loved it. Now using an 18 volt power supply and I love it more. It's very sensitive to your picking, and responds very well like an overdriven amp.....roll down your guitar volume and it cleans up really nice, very useable cleanup. But the 18 volt makes a big difference. For me this is great, because I'm old school and I prefer to use my guitar volume knob to push and pull sound, IOW, I use my guitar volume to raise for solo's/leads, then roll off a little to get back to a nice rythmn crunch. The OCD is well balanced for this.

One other thing I recently changed with my OCD is the amount of Drive/gain I use......I used to basically set it with : volume level at 10 o clock, drive at 2 o clock, tone straight up the middle ( pretty standard set up). After tweeking my set up a bit, I now have it set my volume level between 9-10, and my drive/gain is around 10-11 oclock ( set much less overdrive). This has made a huge difference in my TONE. I can hear every note inside a chord and it rings, and because I roll on and off my guitar volume, I can still roll it up and get to lead sustain overdrive easily, without getting into distortion territory. BTW, I use this pedal through the CLEAN channel of my HRD3, or my 2 x 12 Deville , not the drive channels.
One other thing, I also started out using the toggle switch on OCD in the "HP"( High Peak), but now have changed it to the "LP" ( Low Peak) setting. Trust me, you can still wail, but it gives you a different level of overdrive that to me, is better suited for the type of rock and Blues I like to play.

In the end, it's all about what you like and what sounds good to your ears. Experiment. Best of luck man.
