I recently swapped out the cheap stock speaker in my Champion 40 with a Jensen 12/70 MOD...WOW, what a difference!! Sounds completely amazing!! I liked the amp before, I LOVE it now!! Plus, it was super easy to do!

Congrat, good mod

Many amps are manufactured with cheap speaker.
To keep price low ?

That's my guess also, I'm very happy with the results of the new Jensen!!

Just about any speaker would sound better than the chicom-made OEM driver. The Jensen likely is more efficient and has a better frequency response.

While not a fan myself of most of the Italian Jensen speakers, the 12 MOD 70 does have a pretty good tone. You won't mistake it for a Chicago original, but not a bad choice. I used a pair of them in one of the Bantam Bass Amps I refurbed and the more they broke in the better they sounded. The guy who bought it is still enjoying that amp it and has kept and likes the Jensens tone.

I also replaced the stock speaker in my Champion 20 with a Jensen MOD 8/20, made a world of difference. I appreciate your reply, thanks very much!

Most companies (FMIC among them) seldom put decent speakers into their amps and it's become de rigueur to replace OEM drivers soon after purchase. Dittos with tubes (if the amp is so equipped).

Does the impedance of the replacement Jensen 12/70 (MOD) speaker need to be 8 or 16 ohms?

The Champion 40 requires an 8-ohm speaker......

Thanks Arjay! I also thought to check out the user manual and saw the specs in there (why didn't I think of that first?)!

No sweat -- you have a whole family of forum members here to help. They keep me straight too at times.

One more question - is it a straight swap, i.e. do the screw-holes line up etc?

The Jensen frame is configured for an 8-screw installation but will perform fine if the Champion 40's baffle board only has four.
