Well,

found a guy one province over who builds custom clones. I think that would be the way for me to go once he clears out some of his back log.

I'm thinking a 60 watt single channel twin. No verb, no loop, nothing fancy, should really do the trick. His prices are crazy good for custom work.

I also found the Port City Pearl 50, which sounds like it would be perfect, but the price is a bit scary.

In the mean time I found a BassBreaker combo locally I'm going to try out sometime this week. If it doesn't make the cut, think I'm just going to look for a used twin for now. I say headroom and everyone says twin. Heck if I'm already hauling a 70 pound cab, I might as well haul a 70 pound combo along side it.

They're right of course. The Twin Reverb is the ultimate clean/loud Fender and will certainly deliver what you need. I've never found ANY EL84-powered amp that could rightfully be called clean (not that that's a bad thing). That tube is just not designed for such performance. If you already have a suitable cab and don't need reverb or an effects loop, a vintage Dual Showman head would also serve your purpose. Same output as the TR but they only weigh about 45 pounds.

There are a couple of single-ended class A ones like Laney Lionheart L5 Studio and Vox AC4, but they're not exactly powerful. (I actually like the Laney; the Vox not so much.)

No EL84 amp can deliver any measure of cleans at realistic volume levels like a platform powered by 6L6GC's, 6V6GTA's, 6CA7's, 7027A's, or 6550's. That's why you seldom if ever see any vintage hi-fi gear designed around that tube. A quartet of them in ultra-linear Class AB operation *might* deliver 18 or 20 clean watts. On a good day with a brisk tailwind.

It's going to be difficult to find a single-ended, Class "A" amp that can match the clean headroom of a comparable push-pull amp. Esp one with a good amount of global and/or local feedback.

A friend and I built a couple of SE amps from scratch (DIY, a long time ago). One with a 6L6GC and one with a 300B triode. They both had a "brown" early overdrive, ton of harmonics, and compression. Not exactly clean headroom, typical dual-6L6GC, push-pull, Class AB tone.

Both were great amps. Kinda big brother tone, to the Champ. :D

Good call on the tubes. I have a feeling the Bassbreaker will have nice cleans, but will break up too quick. I should just get what I should have gotten all along. Twin!

Thanks for guiding me everyone! Amazing that the twin seems to be the only amp geared towards pristine stage cleans. Could go Dr. Z or matchless but, I still hear folks around the web saying they need more clean headroom.

Anyway, if you guys care I already eliminated the 68RI, as it's designed to breakup earlier. Already found a 65RI locally to test out, but would love to try a 65 Custom 15 as well before making my decision. Time to do some research :)

Thanks everyone!

Y'all realize the Bassbreaker 45 does NOT have EL84's, right? Mine doesn't.

Yup 34's. I assumed a typo earlier.

That's my bad -- I misread the B45's specs.

With a pair of EL34 bottles, the amp might just make the "clean" cut. Give one a try and let us know your impressions.

well...

Tried a 65 TRRI, Deville 410, Mesa (112 combo, no idea what it was, 50 watts), and a The new 210 Fender bass amp.

I just put a super dark p90 in my guitar, well crazy dark for cleans, but an awesome dirt sound. Bareknuckle Pig90. Anyway...

TRRI: Wasn't impressed at all. It had the headroom that's for sure, but it was muddy. I tried to dial it out with the EQ, but I couldn't find the sweet spot between dialing out the mud, and retaining the oomph. I also found the verb to muddy up the mix. Not at all what I was expecting. Defiantly a "vintage" sound. It also seemed like there was a comp pedal on the vibrato channel. Could really make out that squish. Things were better in the #2 input, but this is not what I expected for an amp that is considered "THE CLEAN AMP". Also some of the knobs were tight, and some were loose, and the bright/norm switches crackled and popped.

Deville 410: Tone was much less muddy, but very scooped. Easilly fixed with a touch of the EQ. Started to get some breakup once the knob got to 2, so had to pass on that one. Amp felt very cheap as a whole.

Mesa: Much preferred this tone. Plus it had the separate 5 band EQ so I was able to dial out the mud. Not even close to enough headroom, oh and the dirt channel was laughable compared to my Oranges. Solid build quality, that's for sure!

Bassman 210 (Bassamp): In all honesty this met my needs the best out of all the amps. The most clean headroom with clarity and a fairly usable EQ. Problem was even with the bass all the way down, it was way too bassy. Taking down the low mid, just killed the sound so. Passed on that guy too.

Anyway back to the drawing board. Guess the Twin was just too "vintage" voiced for my liking.

My 1957 Les Paul Junior with its sixty year-old P90 sounds positively heavenly through my Twin Reverb.

Try to give that Bassbreaker a test-drive before you decide.

Pups that don't give a good clean sound on a TR or Bassman? I would definitely ditch those pups. If either of those two amps don't give you great cleans, there isn't an amp out there that will.
