I have a bdri and the amount of volume at low setting is immense, I've changed to a 12ay7 in V1 and that has opened up some headroom, would changing my 6L6's to 6V6's make a difference or would it damage my amp?

You must adjust bias if you don't want to blow 6V6's
I'll put JJ 6V6S or TAD 6V6GT

Amp may have less clean sound

+1

An output attenuator may provide more versatility.

1- And do not need to see a tech for bias.
2- Can be use with many amps

A 6V6 will not change the power output appreciably. It does give a softer, less dynamic response.
The power characteristics are determined by the B+ voltage, the resistance of the output transformer, and the speaker impedance.
Yellow Jacket converters will lower the output by introducing a cathode resistance. It will eventually burn them out too.
While an attenuator will do the trick, they are about as expensive as the lower wattage amp you should be playing. You're tryin to idle a Maserati down Main Street. Throwing a boat anchor out the back is not the best way to slow it down
Trade in the 40 watt Deluxe for a 15 watt Pro Jr and a couple pedals.

Yes, replacing 6L6s with 6V6s (properly biased), will reduce the output power, nearly in half. Since the 6V6 is 14 watts, compared to the 30 watt 6L6, the bias current will need to be much lower, meaning lower idle watts, and less output.

Better to put all 12AY7's .

Shimmi, the wattage rating of the tube is a capacity rating for safe operation. It is not a limiter in any way.
The power output is dependent on the B+ voltage and the series resistance of the OT. A cathode resistor also lowers power output.
The tube will heat up its plate trying to pass the current. But as a valve, when its turned on fully, it does not limit current.
Fortunately, the 6V6 will handle a lot of AC current and take it pretty well in a 6L6 application.

I've tamed mine some with a 5751 in V1. it actually has a usable volume control on the clean channel now. Also put a 12AT7 in V3. One other option in addition to all the above might be a lower db rated speaker. I've personally never tried it, but some folks say it helps. I didn't particularly care for the stock Eminence speaker. A little too much shrill treble for me. Tried Yellow Jackets in an EL34 amp and took it down to EL84s. Never bonded with it though. Never done 6L6 to 6V6 though
I will say the last thing I would do is trade my BDRI for a Pro Junior. Princeton Reverb maybe.

Paul Strat don't waste you time and money on tubes or speaker, buy a speaker attenuator.

Oh it's great now. Totally different amp than it was out of the box. It's a keeper for me. Still loud, but a lot better tone, and the volume control is much more tapered. Any recommendation on an attenuator? I tried a Weber on a 50 watt Marshall I had a few years ago. Just couldn't seem to get the amp dialed in while using it.
