I just bought a Blues Jr NOS that I was going to be using at home and for small jams with friends. Well, plans are quickly changing and there may be a possibility of forming a “garage” band with a drummer, lead guitar and bass. I mostly (attempt to) play rhythm. Anyway, I am sure we won’t have a PA right off the bat, and I am concerned about the Jr keeping up with everyone. Would I be better off exchanging (with GC’s 30 day policy) the Jr for a BDRI? I don’t want overkill, but I don’t want to get lost in the mix either.

Thanks,
Jim

I have a Blues Jr NOS and although I dont gig I still think it should be loud enough. You probably will have some overkill with the Blues Deluxe or even a Hot Rod Deluxe. The latter 2 are very loud. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe Tweed also and it is an awesome amp, but It needs to be cranked up a little to find the sweet spot. My neighbors cant avoid hearing it when I dial in that spot.

Hello Strat2k6,

I've got a BJ NOS great little amp.

I Don"t know what type of music you'll
be playing

But laddie if your in a rock type band and
against a drumset, a bass, and vocals and no PA.

You gonna need more Power.
possibly 2 amps. :D

Cheers.

A real dilema! The Blues jr. may not cut it in a rock band, even if mic'd. Drummers usually set the stage for sound levels, and most of them can't or won't resist playing loud!

The problem is practice. At home the Blues Deluxe Reissue will annoy everyone in the house and the neighbors too. You could buy a small, inexpensive solid state amp (15 watt) for around $100 to practice with at home. It won't sound great, but at least you could practice technique, etc. Sometimes using headphones on these little practice amps (which mutes the speaker) makes it sound a little better to your ears.

There are a couple of mods you can do to the BJ that will increase the apparent volume and give it a less "boxy" sound. I would start with the Torres Engineering tube kit. (see their web site) I would also look at Bill's BJ mods. (see that web site) The tone stack mod is very cool. Last I would pit a Celestion Vintage 30 in it from Avatar Speakers. (See that web site)
Any or any combination of these mode will help the BJ cut through the drum kit.

Personally I have a Blues Deluxe too......It does have a volume control on it so I find it fits in just about anywhere.

You could always stick the drummer behind a glass wall:

Somewhere I saw a performance with the drummer in a plexiglass 'cage'. I can't remember if it was on TV or on a live stage, but it looked like a great idea. All the drums were mic'd and the sound man only let out the amount of sound that was needed. Of course he wore ear bud monitors to hear what was happening outside 'his little world'.Great idea for those who give major performances and have roadies, stage crews, and a large truck or bus to transpot everything.

I was in the EXACT same predicament as you three weeks ago. Just bought a Blues Jr and found out we were going to be doing a big outdoor set without mic'ing the amps. I was under 30 days and thought about returning the BJr and getting the BDRI. I bought the BDRI and kept the BJr and glad I did.

I put a $17.95 omnisonic on my BDRI and I've played it live twice and can play at home anytime without bothering wife and kids, works great.

There are more times than not that the BJr will be more than enough and it's MUCH lighter and easier to transport. Plus I get different sounds from the two amps. I'm so glad I didn't use the BJr as credit toward the BDRI. I love them both and they each serve a purpose.

If someone stuck a gun to my head I'd probably pick the BDRI though. A less than $20 piece and it opens a lot of options. The BJr is still too loud at home for me to get to the crunch. Since it doesn't have a loop, I can't power it back as much. The Master Volume doesn't quiet it down enough for me. However, someone would have to stick a gun to my head to make me choose.

Well, I took the NOS Blues Jr back and decided to go with the BDRI. I just couldn't pass it up. It is not as hard to control the volume as I thought, although it will get away from you quickly. I am thinking about getting one of those omnisonic boxes just in case, but I think it's going to be fine. I was pleasantly surprised that my wife didn't think it was too loud. Granted, I was trying to keep it at a playable range for her sake. If it comes down to it, I have a 30-watt modeling amp that I can plug headphones into it and blow out my own eardrums.
