So I've got a 68 custom vibrolux reverb and I must say I'm very happy with the tone and style of this amp. I'm finding that for my home use of just noodling around and occasionally recording with it that it's a bit more volume than I need. I know that the stock 10/30's in the amp are relatively low efficiency but I've been kicking around the idea of trying to cut off a few DB's by changing out the baffle and converting it to a 110 or 112. It seems like I can find a few 4 ohm 12's on the market and I know some companies will also custom make their 8 ohm offerings in a 4 ohm. Curious if anyone else has attempted this before in this amp or another two speaker configured amp. As my goal is to reduce volume I'm just wondering how much of a volume difference it's actually going to make. I think the 10/30's are rated at 95ish DB so if I switch to one speaker that is 98db but getting 100% of the power rather than two speakers sharing the load, can I expect any reduction in volume or am I just chasing my tail? Thanks everyone! BTW this is my first post here but this seems like a great community forum.

I think you'll achieve better results using a stand-alone speaker attenuator.

An attenuator is certainly the best way to dramatically reduce volume but my goal is to just take some off, not turn a 35 watt tube amp into a "bedroom" amp. Attenuators severely interfere with tone, or at least how it's perceived as an amp driving speakers to compress is a large factor in the broad tonal scape. An amps volume can be greatly altered by a more or less efficient speaker, even more than the difference of 5-10 watts of output power. So all that said, my question related more to the differences in output DB's of a single speaker vs two speakers sharing the load of the amp. To reframe and clarify:
My 35 watt amp has two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel for a 4 ohm load, each rated at 95 DB. If I were to swap them for a single 4 ohm speaker rated at 95 DB would the result be the same volume, less volume or more volume?
Part B of my question relates to speaker size. If the DB ratings of an 8", 10", 12" and 15" speaker are all the same, let's say 95 DB, the size plays no factor in the resulting volume correct?
I understand the rough idea of how speaker output vs amp wattage works. Perhaps just anecdotally in my experiences, I have an excelsior pro with the 15" eminence 1518 which is rated at 103 DB and let me just tell you that 13 watt amp paired with this insanely loud speaker is every bit as loud as my vibrolux. Significantly different worlds with headroom but volume output ceiling is very close in amps of over 20 watts difference. That's why I'm so compelled to explore speaker variation in my CVR to explore slight volume taming rather than an attenuator. Hope that clarification helps.

Clear as mud.

"I'm finding that for my home use of just noodling around and occasionally recording with it that it's a bit more volume than I need."

You've got two amps but both of them are too loud for the above scenario and you don't want to use an attenuator. Diddlefucking around with one 95 dB speaker vs two 95 dB speakers will produce NO APPRECIABLE RESULT.

Get yourself a blackface Vibrochamp and be done with it.

I have a blackface vibro champ as well as a 5f2 and 5e3 that I use for recording. I actually have over a dozen amps all with different applications. Sometime when recording I find it more organic to hear the live mix of the full band rather than have it fed through headphones so my CVR is just about perfect for the full band, much closer than my lower wattage amps can do without breakup as we play a ton of jazz. I'm literally looking for a 2-3 DB difference (not spl). I'll just buy speakers and experiment. I will share the result on here for future folks who may have the same question and want a real answer. Thanks!

Wouldn't building a 1 x 12 or 1 X 10 external cab be easier? Just use external speaker outlet of the CVR and disconnect the onboard speaker.

Wrong amp for your purpose. That's a killer club gigging amp, that only gets better the more you turn it up!

Get a Super Champ X2 for your home recordings, etc. Be sure to download the Fender Fuse software, too.
