Can you have the tubes on your amp go horizontal instead of vertical?

I am wanting to change the orientation of the control panel on my FHRD III so it faces the front of the amp, like the blackface amps. I have research other sites and have seen mixed opinions. So, I am asking the same question here.

Yes I am aware that they would need to be properly supported if you can. Also that there would need to be room above to avoid heat issues on the top of the amp.

Horizontal is not as good as vertical (upward or downward). Grids tend to sag more (esp in big octal output tubes) towards the plate and rod structure when laying sideways.

Now, for 9-pin minis (like 12AX7 or EL84 tubes) ---- horizontal alignment is not as much of a problem. Grids were designed with that orientation in mind. As in avionics equipment and car radios.

The HRDIII comes with the 12ax7 tubes. Would this mean that it would be something I can do without changing tubes?

Engineering issues aside, such a radical rearrangement of the chassis and cabinet will utterly destroy the amp's residual resale value when you decide to sell it.

I am not planning on selling any time soon, if ever. I would be building another cabinet keeping the original so all I would have to do is move the chassis back into the original if I do ever sell.

You can place the tube sideways, but you run the risk of early noise issues and shorts --- esp in those 6L6GC tubes.

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as the cab is solid and ventilation doesn't suffer. People place amps on the side, and put them on tilted bases, with little problem.

Check the data sheet for the tubes. The data sheet might list which orientation is required. Generally speaking, horizontal tube orientation is not a problem. For example, a TAD 6L6 lists "any" under operating position, so vertical or horizontal is just fine. There is no difference in how the internal parts of a tube act whether mounted vertical or horizontal.

Sagging grids?
