I literally just went out and purchased a new Fender Champion 20, unboxed/unwrapped it, plugged it in and turned the power on to make sure everything was working. To my surprise, it's crackling and hissing before I've touched any knobs or plugged anything into it. The volume and intensity of the noise changes as I turn the different knobs, but it won't stop...very annoying. I drove an hour and a half one way just to buy a cheap practice amp and I come back home to this. Do I troubleshoot/attempt to fix it or do I just return it for a new one? I've never owned a cheap solid state amp before, so maybe this is just how they are out of the box? Surely not. Please advise!

Return back to the store and try the new one before go home.

Any amp must be trouble free. Low cost or not. Many expensive Fender amp have few issue.

+1

Fender doesn't fix those things -- they never have. They simply hook-shot them into the nearest dumpster and give the customer a new one.

Make damn sure the replacement works *BEFORE* you leave the store!

Update on original post: After a few minutes of the static mentioned in the title, the amp let out 4-5 super loud, intense POPS and went completely silent. I plugged in my guitar and nothing...that is, except for the slight smell of burning metal.

So, I returned it to the store the next day (yesterday) and got a great price on a Mustang 2 V2. I tried it thoroughly before leaving the store, they gave me a 10% discount for the trouble and bc it was the floor model and also, I plugged this new one into a surge protector, opposed to the wall outlet just in case. In 30 years of playing guitar, I've never seen a new amp, especially a Fender, do anything like that...the salesman also said the same thing, in a tone which implied that maybe I overgigged the thing overnight or something. Regardless, it happened and I know now to NEVER leave the store (or the person's house, if buying used gear) without trying it out beforehand. The Champ 20 comes in a box, so it just never occurred to me to ask to open and test it...a valuable lesson learned!

Lest you forget, every blackface Fender made between 5 January 1965 and the beginning of the silverface era around the autumn of 1967 is a CBS AMP.

Which of those blackfaces do you regard as a substandard piece of CBS junk?

On the worst day they ever had, CBS/FMI never produced the likes of the crap we're seeing today.

CBS and FMI are two different company to me. FMI with Bill Schultz start a "new' Fender.
CBS area start to drop quality on most Leo Fender products.

What about solid states amps CBS built ?
And acoustic guitars who broke in your hand ?
And many other products I ( we ) don't remember.

You write Fender is now worse than CBS was, you could be right, but I hope not

De quoi parles-tu???

FMI has precisely DICK to do with Bill Shultz.

FMI is FENDER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS (A DIVISION OF CBS BROADCASTING, INC). It came into existence on 5 January 1965 and lasted until the CBS divestiture and sale of FMI in the mid 1980s.

The new owners incorporated as the FENDER MUSICAL INSTRUMENT CORPORATION and hired Bill Shultz away from Yamaha Musical Instruments to run it.

History......learn it.

Not entirely correct.
CBS hired Bill Schultz away from Yamaha in 1981.
CBS sold Fender to Schultz and other employees in 1985.
So he was president of FMI, under CBS, for four years.

Whatever.

The fact remains, FMI is NOT FMIC.

And Bill Shultz didn't do Fender any favors in either case IMO.
