I recently bought a Hot Rod Emerald Isle and thought I would drop a 12AT7 into the V1 to help with the volume. Through a fair bit of research I bought a Mullard NOS and I've popped it in and it sounds great when clean, the only problem is when I press channel select I get a horrendously loud pop and no sound and then the amp screams when more drive is selected. I'm super new to all this and appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Cheers

If you reinstall the original 12AX7 back into the V1 socket does the phenomenon disappear?

If so, it's possible that one half of that Mullard tube is bad.

+1 Retroverbial

5751 or 12AY7 are a good ( better ? ) replacement for a 12AX7, than 12AT7 and keep more the tone of a 12AX7 than a 12AT7

Yep, a 12AT7 is better suited for V3 (PI).

As everyone else has said the 12at7 tube characteristics are very different from the 12ax7. If you only look at the Mu value it may have made sense to try it but its the other factors that make it a bad fit for "that amp in V1". A good 5751 is probably gonna be a good substitute if you are trying to get a bit more headroom from the clean channel while being able to jump to the more drive channels.

A 5751 or a 12AY7.
