Hey I just signed up here but as you can probably guess I'm a huge fender fan! I'll start by saying hi to everyone here. I might be getting a 80s red knob the twin for trade for my Gibson les Paul studio 60s tribute with p90s. From videos I seen and some reading I have done they seem to be well liked by a lot of people and the sounds very very nice and beautiful. The amp is in great condition just a tiny little mark in the cloth. I was wondering what you people think of them and this deal I might make? They seem to have made a little mark in fender history as well. I like collecting gear too mostly guitars.. but I just started collecting the last few years.

Do you *really* need a 100-watt boat anchor?

There is no collectible value whatsoever in a red-knob Twin......NONE.

Buy something useful that will appreciate in value. Like a '67 Vibro Champ.

Red Knob Twin is going to be LOUD and clean. Big gig area loud. Prolly not what you want for your bedroom practice sessions. If this is what you are looking for in an amp.

A nice SF Vibro-Champ, Princeton Reverb, or even Deluxe Reverb will suffice for the home. With the minimal number of pedals needed (you'll need a few for that Twin). Don't know what you are using now, as an amp... but 22 watts is plenty loud, if it's a good tube amp. Even diming a VC get pretty loud, for the home. Esp with a good speaker onboard.

The other thing to note... Big powerful amps can be a hassle to keep working. Esp ones with a lot of bells-&-whistles, like that red knob Twin. The 6V6GT powered Fender amps from nearly every generation are easy to maintain (in comparison to their 6L6GC big brothers). Simple to use. Very flexible range of useable tones.

Good luck with your decision. Keep us posted!

Every reply has been spot on, but some additional info...the Red Knob Twin does have a power cut switch so you can play at 25 watts power. So if you have your heart set on the amp, its something you should know. They are pretty reliable amps for the most part too. IIRC the input jacks can be somewhat troublesome and a bit of a pain to replace.

FWIW

I previously owned one of these red knob "The Twin" amplifiers , in the early 1990's
I can say it was one of the worst amps I have ever owned. For me I should have gotten a 65 deluxe
reverb. I didn't know any better. The salesman just wanted to make a sale . When you start buying amplifiers , its one of the most important parts of your sound. Do your research , it will save you hard earned cash. Decide first what style of music your playing , how much room you have in your vehicle to carry it. and most important why you need a 100 watt amp ? if your playing small clubs
a deluxe reverb can handle it. If you need high volume distortion and break up maybe a twin is for you . the 85 watt version is a better choice but it may cost you more . Hope this helps Good Luck .

Many vintage amps ( red knob or great Blackface or...) need to see a tech for a good tune-up. They did not see a qualified tech since 20 years or more.

After they could sound better. But a red knob is not a Blackface......

First a serious test with a guitar before buying will say a lot about the tone.

I did end up tradeing the guitar for a amp but I got something different... I was hopeing to get another Fender Amp like a Deluxe Reverb but I ended up getting a great Vox AC30C2 that was in perfect condition. I must say it is great! I prefer Fender amps myself but I seem to like it almost just as much. Your Replys helped me make a better decision tho! Thanks!

The AC30 is certainly more sensible than a red-knob Twin. And I'm sure you'll be more comfortable hauling it around to gigs, jams, etc.

You might keep some spare EL84's on hand -- those particular tubes run pretty hot and do not last like a 6L6GC or a 6V6GTA.
