I know this has been covered ad nauseam.

I haven't played my 68 CVR in over 10 months and have been playing the 68 CDR instead.
The CVR has some really tubes in it too. I put in a nice set of SED Winged-C 6L6's and I really like the more exact attack of the SS rectifier.
But it's the stock speakers that sound too sterile to me.

When I plug the CVR into my 2x12" Celestion V30 cab I like the tone much more. But, the V30's are still not the right tone for what I want from the CVR.
I want to have that nice grit mid-grunt the V30's have, but I want it to also have that bright top end sparkle like a Twin has.
What speaker or set of speakers should I consider to get that?

Maybe a Jensen C10 with a P10 of some kind?
Suggestions please, based on my tone description above?
Hopefully it made some sense. :)

I've I can't get the tone I want from the CVR I'll have to sell it because I really don't need it.
In it's place I'm thinking about an Engl GigMaster 30 watt head.

I like the alnico speakers in my SF Super Reverb and Vibrolux Reverb. If you have time and $$ to hunt down and recone them... vintage US made Jensen P10Q, P10N, or CTS 10-inch alnico. For modern made speakers, the Weber 10A125.

+1 on every point!

I'd add only that the Kendrick Black Frame Ten might also provide what you're looking for.

Thanks guys.

I'll check those out on ebay and the rest of the interwebs.

What about modern made speakers that have some of the same qualities of those vintage speakers?

BTW, I got the CVR out the other night and I had forgotten how much brighter and "cleaner" sounding it is compared to the 68 CDR. Of course the CDR has a Celestion V type speaker, which is similar to the darker tones of the Celestion V30.
I wonder why Fender didn't use a more American sounding speaker in the CVR, especially since it uses 6L6 power tubes, and the CDR uses 6V6 which I think are more definitive of the American sound compared to EL34 or EL84.

Anyway, I'm not diggin the CVR again especially with the slight mid compression is has along with that bright Fender top end and rounder and tighter low end. It works fantastic with higher gain pedals.

So, I think I'm looking at speaker changes rather than selling the amp.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

I don't recall right now, but does the CVR use 2-8ohm speakers in parallel for a 4ohm load output from the amp?

WOW!

A refurbished pair of Weber Alnico 8ohm speakers is $189!
Yeow!

It has a "make offer" option.
What is a reasonable offer for a pair of these refurbished speakers?

And, is there anything to be concerned about or consider when looking at refurbished speaker?

That's not a bad price for a pair of alnico Webers.

Ok.
I guess if I'm willing to spend $60 for a pair of NOS Ei pre tubes, then $190 for a pair of vintage speakers that will make an actual dramatic difference in tone isn't that bad.

I'm about 120 miles from Kokomo where Weber is located. I wonder if I took my amps there if they would let me try out some of their speakers before making a decision?

I'll have to call them.

I'm not having much luck finding vintage American made Jensen's, but there are plenty of new Italian made "vintage" Jensen's. If found a new P10Q are around the same price as a new Weber vintage series 10A125.
Any thoughts on how those compare?
With the vibrolux I could get one of each and get the good and bad. :)

If you add manure-tainted water to clean water, what is the sum?

Finding vintage gear requires PATIENCE.

OTOH, if you're an adherent to instant gratification then by all means buy the imported Jensini's.

Weber is well-known for accommodating its customers -- you might have some luck making that trip to Kokomo.

These might be a worthy alternative......

Sorry, I misspoke...err mis-wrote. What I meant is, if I were to mix a new "vintage" Weber with a new "vintage" Jensen, would that be a good combo?

Or, do you mean that new Italian Jensen's are bad to begin with, and I should just stick with the Weber, unless I can find real vintage re-coned Jensens?

I'm not in a hurry necessarily. I have time to wait of course, but I was hoping to at least find 1 or 2 real vintage Jensens on Ebay. I was really surprised that I didn't find any.
I'll check again later tonight.

I looked at the website you posted. Do you like the VOR V10A?
The price is reasonable.
I see Eminence speakers sold everywhere, and mostly the reviews are positive.

I need to get to my buddies guitar shop. He deals in only high quality used and vintage gear.
To be able to compare I'd have to know what an actual vintage Jensen, or other, sounds like.
Just found out he's got an original condition 1962 Les Paul/SG!
The pict look great! I've got to check that one out before it gets sold.

Thanks for all you advice Arjay. :)

Correct.

I wouldn't put an imported Jensen into a transistor radio.

There are PLENTY of vintage Jensen speakers on Ebay on any given day. I found several, including some matched pairs, just yesterday. Don't bother with categories, just type "Jensen speaker c10" into the Ebay browser bar. You'll be surprised at what you find.

There are a lot of vintage Jensen on Ebay, but there are not a lot of 10" alnico Jensen speakers at all.
There's a decent amount of 12", but 10's are scarce.
And I'm not looking for a ceramic magnet speakers.
If I'm going to pay a lot, then I want alnico mag Jensens.

Looks like Weber may be the way to go.

Thanks again.

The finest pair of OEM tens that Fender ever installed in a Vibrolux Reverb......

Image

Fender-marked Jensen C10NS's from the 50th week of 1965 (the amp dates to January of '66).

bit late to the party on this one.......

Im still loving my Italian Jensen reissue P10Q's, 65 quid each here in the UK , smooth cone, 40W each, pair of TAD 6L6 WGC biased just nice, its fricking lovely. i can get awesome crisp yet crunchy fender clean tone from 3 - 4 on the volume and it just gets better and better as you turn it up. both channels have there own glorious flavour with this combination.

maybe i just had 2 good jensens, I dont know why everyone slates them but mine are lovely.

I have to admit i didnt like 2 x new C10Q's in the 68 CVR, that was jank... but the P10Qs are perfect for me.
