Hello all, I recently acquired this issue with my BDRI.
I created a video to explain the phenomenon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

First thing I'd try is cleaning the sockets and tube pins with contact cleaner. I like Caig Deoxit D100. Just a little on pins and socket tangs. Work the tubes in-&-out a few times. See if that helps.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Thanks BMW2002Ti,

I actually have a can of deOxit at home. Strangely enough, I had a Bugera V5 that had a similar problem.
I will spray the tube leads and work the tubes in and out a few times. Should I do this for ALL the tubes or just the preamp tubes?

One other nugget of info that may or may not have some importance...
I had swapped out a few tubes in an effort to tame this beast.

I don't recall if the slots are labeled V1, V2, V3 from right to left or left to right...
But, I had an AT7 in the middle slot (V2?) and an AY7 in the slot on the right (V3? PI slot?).

That being said, I replaced all of the original tubes back into the amp and the issue persisted.

Thanks again.

From rear (right to left): V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5.

From Owner's Manual, I have V1, V2 and V3 = 12AX7. And V3 and V4 = 6L6GC.

IME, the 12AY7 has strongest effect when replacing the input tube. V1, in your amp's case.

Good luck! :D

So, yes, I had an AY7 in V1 and an AT 7 in V2. Just trying to tame the volume and get some earlier breakup.

Anyway, I digress. Any way this crackling has something to do with reverb?
I hadn't thought to turn the verb off and try it.....

Unfortunately, the reverb is driven by solid-state devices in your amp. So, no single tube associated with this EFX. But, what I'd do is turn off all EFX switches and see if the noise goes away. If noise stops... turn on each EFX on-by-one, until the noise comes back.

Sounds like a tube problem to me -- or more specifically, a tube-socket problem. I would reheat and reflow all of the solder joints connecting the lead-in wires to their respective pin tangs. One or more of these joints may be fractured.

Thanks! Should I do this to all 5 sockets?

If you are going to do this --- and it's a good idea --- I'd do all the sockets and the input jack connections. Wick or suck up the OEM stuff and use good 60/40 Tin/Lead solder. I use Kester or TRT Wonder solder. Then, apply the contact cleaner.

Good luck! Keep us informed. :D

+1

Don't forget the footswitch jack.

It doesn't work like that. If you use lower gain tubes to "tame the volume" you will get a cleaner sound, not earlier breakup.

Yeah, I didnt word that very well. I meant that those were two goals for tinkering with different tubes. Not not at the same time...
Thanks though....

I have decided that I have to take it to a tech. I don't want to make any mistakes and damage the amp.....I will let you know what the tech says.

A wise decision.

If he/she is amenable, ask if you can watch the tech work and perhaps learn a few things. It might spare you another repair bill should some small issue arise later on.

Actually, I was wrong. Before, I had swapped out V1 and V3. I brought it to work with me today put an AT7 in V2.....no squeal. So, I thought i'd test it and throw the stock GT AX7 back in it....no Squeal!

BUT

At this time, I DO NOT have an instrument plugged into the amp. So, based on the last 10 minutes...No input = No Squeal. This is the first time I've turned it on without an input connected, so I don't know if this is an anomaly or not.

Could this be useful information?

I cannot test it with a guitar plugged in, because of course, I did not bring my guitar with me to work today......Sigh.....
