I was finding that my Pro Jr was having a spring rattling against metal sound. I removed the 2 springs and the plate that surrounds the two EL84s. The spring rattling sound went away. Is it safe to leave the springs and plate off? Will the EL84 tubes vibrate loose and fall? The two ECC83S tubes don't have any holder?

Thanks. If this was answered before, would appreciate being steered to the right post.

The EL84s might fall out without the retaining bracket and springs. The stock amp can generate a lot of heat from the output tubes, and the heating and cooling cycles when turning the amp on and off, can allow the tubes to become loose over time. Here is what I did as a preventative measure, and it also dampens the spring noise.

How tight are the EL84 being held in the socket? Should be okay, as long as you don't haul the amp around too much & bang it down onto the floor.

Tube retainer is useful if you carry often your amp.

Or with no retainer check tubes if they are seated well. Use clean cloth, finger grease are not good.

Many olds amps I fix have no tube retainer or some loose and some are missing with no problem with tubes. They don't fall.

Thanks for the replies. The Pro Jr is one of my home practice amps. It stays put but I'll double check the tubes to make they don't come loose. To Stratele52 where are those tube rings from? I'll google in the meantime. Ive never seen that before.

I talk about "old style" one. I don't know where you can buy the tubes retaining I see in your photo

BTW... keep that retainer plate and the springs in a safe place. I think the item is no longer being stocked by Fender.

I'm not a big fan of clips. Tubes get hot, and the glass and contents expand. If the tube doesn't get hot and cool down all over at the same rate, like if something is touching it and convects some of the heat away from just one spot, tensions build. That's not good for tube longevity.

I've never had a tube come loose. YMMV.

Clips , what kind of clips ? The one show by Shimmilou from the Pro Junior ?

It may work as a heat sink IMO
