I'm currently using my new Bassbreaker 007 head with an Orange PPC112 cabinet and I'm really enjoying the sounds, except for one problem: I can't raise the bass knob any higher than 7 o'clock without the bass becoming extremely overpowering. In fact, even 7 o'clock is pushing it to be honest!

I was wondering if this is the norm for these amps, or perhaps it's my combination of the amp with the 12" speaker cabinet that could be causing it. Any thoughts on this?

As a side, there's also a constant hum that starts as soon as the tube warms up. This hum's always consistent, never changing in volume. Not sure if that's normal for a tube amp (this is my first), so any input here would be nice too.

Thanks folks!

Not normal, did the amp make hum with no guitar plug in ? Nothing plug ?
If yes, bring back to the store on waranty; could be a tube issue .

Yup it still hums with nothing plugged in. Looks like I need to get in touch with the store.

Although looking at a few reviews, a couple of people do mention the hum. Perhaps it's just a "feature" of this amp?

Yes, return amp to the store, tube amp should not have hum.

If that's a "feature" of that amp, return it for a refund or learn to live with the obnoxious hum.

Those are your choices.

Sadly I think this permanent low frequency hum is normal for the Bassbreaker 007, and it can be annoying if you are trying to use the amp at bedroom volumes. I have tried three of these amps from three different shops and they all had exactly the same hum, so it seems very unlikely to be a freak problem that only affects a few. The volume of the hum is not very loud but is always constant, regardless of how you set the gain and master, even with everything set to zero and no guitar plugged in you will still hear the hum. None of my other valve amps have had this problem, the hum is not the same as the hiss that valve amps typically have (the hiss would get louder as you turn the volume up). Because the hum does not change volume no matter what you do, it must be getting introduced to the signal very near the end of the signal path through the amplifier, because if it was occurring before the power amp then I think the master volume control would affect the amount of hum. I’ve heard people say that single ended amp designs (like the Bassbreaker 007) can be inherently noisy but I assume that type of noise would still be affected by the master volume control. I suspect the source of the Bassbreaker 007 hum is something to do with the output transformer, or insufficient shielding between components, but I don’t know exactly. It would be interesting to hear what an amp designer thinks of it.
Obviously, the hum becomes less and less noticeable to your ear the louder you use the amp, because then the constant volume hum becomes a relatively smaller proportion of the total output. For example if the hum was about 10% of the signal when the master was set low, increasing the master so the guitar sounds twice as loud will reduce the apparent hum to 5% of the total signal so you notice it less. A solution I have found for eliminating the hum while keeping the output at comfortable bedroom level is to use an external attenuator to significantly reduce the power going to the speaker, and turning up the master to compensate. That way the hum becomes too quiet to hear at all, but using an attenuator does reduce clean headroom which was already pretty low on this amp.

I just wanted to comment on the bassy complaint on this AMP. When I first got this amp the bass kind of shocked me, just touching the low E strings on my SG or LP could produce a booming sound that was unbearable. However, I finally got the urge to adjust my pickup heights to my liking which I never attempted before, and after some trial and error lowering the hieght under the heaviest strings the booming is gone, and the overall tones I am getting now out of this AMP are incredible!!!!! Yes there is a hum, but it's a low watt tube amp built to be overdriven at low volumes, I kinda expected that, and it's only noticable at all if I'm not playing.....which I tend not to do much on this awesome AMP.
