Hi all, new here but been lurking since December. I play mainly an MIM Strat and MIM Tele. Just sold my Peavey Windsor on ebay and recently returned a VOX AD50VT. Been playing mainly thru a Blues Jr w/Bad Monkey. Play live once a week and mic the Blues Jr.

Recently found out we would be playing a very large un mic'd County Fair and I started perusing for a larger amp. Yesterday I got a smoking deal on a brand new BDRI and I couldn't turn it down. We unboxed it and played it at the store and it sounded great.

I get home and it has an unbearable hum. Tried all the usual suspects first. Turned off computer, tried different outlets, tested for microphonic tubes, etc. Still haven't traced it down yet but a lot of good enough here via the search button.

What I couldn't find thru search was why none of my pedals work with the BDRI. I only use a Bad Monkey and EH-Delay (Very sparingly on delay). Since I've moved to Fender amps I took my compressor out of the equation. I tried guitar->pedals->amp and I tried it thru the Preamp In/Out loop. No go. All they do is amplify the obnoxious hum.

It's definitely amp centric because I can switch everything over to Blues Jr and I'm fine.

TIA
Brad

Just a long shot but....are you powering the pedals w/ batteries or an AC power supply?

If using batteries, are they fresh? If using a wart/transformer rect. power supply, try using batteries in the event you are getting AC interference from the wart.

Are you near any flouerescent lights?

These are just a few simple things to check out, which you may have already done.

Actually using a Daisy Chain to power the pedals. No FL lights.

As I was reading your post something hit me. Where I play there's nothing BUT FL lights and other instruments plugged all around. I plug my amp into a surge protector there. At home with the Blues Jr I get the faintest hum, it's so faint it's not worth mentioning, but I'm plugged into the wall. At Church no hum at all.

Could it be that the BJr and BDRI are basically humming the same and the extra volume on the BDRI just makes it more noticeable? My omnisonics att. should be here at noon so I had the volume SOOO low. I'm wondering if I had the volume so low I could even detect turning a pedal on.

That's just the way I've been sitting here trying to decipher what ifs trying to figure it out.

I think it has to be either a problem ground or interference. The two amps, being of different design would have differences in the way they are shielded and different grounds also.

Do you have another place to take it and play? Like a separate garage, a friend or neighbor's place, the church?

I have both a BJ and a Blues Deluxe Reissue. When I first got the BJ, I also bought a Digitech pedal for it. That pedal and that particular BJ did not work together and had a very loud obnoxious hum. Took the pedal and traded it for a Boss and it was OK. But, that BJ used to be much noiser than my BDRI when I played it in a specific room of the house. For some reason, it is no longer noisey??? I blame it on the power.

I would say that if you can test it in a 3rd environment and it's OK then somewhere your house current is picking up dirty power. If not, you could ask the music store to have it checked out by a technician for proper grounds AND/OR you could buy a noise gate pedal.

Maybe cranking it up some with the attenuator might do the trick.

These kinds of problems are sometimes tough to find. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the suggestions and I'm leaning toward that being the case. It played beautifully in the store and I watched them unbox it. I'm the only one to play it. I did have cell phones in there and my laptop in front of me. It never bothered any of my other amps. I guess each one has its own personality. Now I'm itching to get home and troubleshoot.

I have a key to the Church and since it's Fri night, I might just run down there and plug 'er in.

I bought that omnisonic off ebay and USPS was supposed to have it to me by noon. I talked to the seller about needing it quickly for this weekend and he figured up the additional costs and bent over backwards to help me out and he gave me the confirmation number before 11AM yesterday for overnight by noon today. It's 4PM my time and no show.

BTW, I consider this no fault of the seller, he really bent over backwards in the middle of his day to rush this out for me.

All is well. Fiddled with it here at home and no hum at all. All I did was unplug it from the wall and plug it into a surge strip. I then turned the amp around backwards. I do this on stage for two reasons anyway. 1 - the wording of the control knobs is upside down on the Blues Jr and Blues Deluxe when you look at them from the speaker side and the face plate is counter sunk and hard to make adjustments live. 2 - I turn my amp backwards so I hear mostly what is coming thru the monitor as opposed to my amp drowning everything out. I used to think I was too loud and would turn down when it was just me standing in front of the speaker and sandwhiched between it and a monitor.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hate that a brand new house has such crappy wiring.

Glad to hear your problem is resolved, BUT don't jump to the conclusion that it is necessarily the wiring in your house that was the culprit. It may be and then again it could be external. Just another one of life's mysteries;-)

I took it to Church and played live with it yesterday and no problems. I can see right now that the Blues Jr will be going to the bulk of mic'd gigs and the BDRI will be outdoor unmic'd deals and plain old band rehersal. Quite a weight difference.

I read your repsonse over the weekend and although I saw other posts, it said there was no posting on weekends for me. Last night I unplugged it from the surge protector and back into the wall and there was that hum, unplug it and go back to surge strip and it was gone. I can plug my Blues Jr into that exact outlet or the surge and no problems either way.

It's all good. As long as I avoid that one outlet I'm fine! At Church there is already a surge where I plug in, might just add a surge protector to the gig bag in case I play somewhere and it's an issue. No real biggie, just glad it worked out.

Really appreciate everyone who responded! Hopefully I can contribute here and help others too.
