Hello. If this question isn't welcome then I'm sorry. I made an account specifically to try and seek an answer.

I was playing my George Benson HRD just moments ago when out of nowhere it shut itself off.

1. I started losing audible guitar sound from the amp. I hit an open G and before my sustain ended, I lost sound as...

2. A loud hum from the speaker drowned out my guitar.

3. After the hum I heard a small "pop" like sound, then the amp lost all power.

I've spent the past 20 minutes or so trying to see if I could jerry-rig something up to make it work, but to no avail. None of the tubes are loose and the speaker cords appear to be fine. Amps aren't my forte, unfortunately.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. This amp is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best amp I own and one of the best amps I've ever played. It'd be a shame if something unrepairable happened to it so spontaneously.

Did any weird odor manifest itself when #3 occurred?

You probably went through a power tube.
Get a new fuse and pull the 6L6 power tubes. Turn the amp on. Standby on. If the fuse doesn't blow, get a new pair of power tubes and install them
If that fixes it, get it biased.
There are very few things that will blow the fuse in an HRDX. Power tube failure is most likely and a common occurance.
The hum was the cathode shorting to the filament and overloading until the fuse went with a pop.

+1 Tim

I would add that if an output tube shorted (which this seems to be), then likely it also took out a screen grid resistor. So, it would be a good idea to have someone competent have a look inside.
