Hi All,

After about a year, I am about ready to part with my Super Sonic 22. The idle noise, even with a volume pedal in the fx loop, negatively impacts recording when mic'ing the speaker. I really like the vintage channel tone, but enough is enough.

As far as reliability and reasonable idle noise, what are your thoughts about the '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue? I am playing mainly jazz and pop tunes and need a nice clean tone for my home studio and the rare playing small coffee house type venues.

The Deluxe Reverb *may* be a better fit. Its 12-inch speaker yields a more robust tone with substantially better bass response and the amp's dual channels provide added sonic flexibility.

Thx, Arjay,

The '65 DRRI is the second contender and probably my favorite amp when listening to some of the great rock recordings of the past 50 years. I just want to make sure I have some real headroom for my style of playing.

Between the two, is one more reliable than the other?

Probably not. Both are assembled with the same crappy RoHS solder and use the same rated-for-2000-hours components. If reliability is a key consideration, look for a used, pre-2006 Deluxe Reverb. The parts are identical but it's wired together with conventional tin/lead solder.

I thought that was the case. I let you know what I find. Thx

An easy visual clue to differentiate the pre-2006 DRRI's from more contemporary editions is the phony "ground" switch at the extreme left side of the rear panel, as with this example from 1994......

Image

The switch itself does nothing -- it's not even wired into the circuit. But Fender deleted it at the start of the 2006 model year, the same year that they adopted the RoHS-compliant solder.

Arjay,

Are all the Fender amps made at the Lake Oswego, OR plant pre-RoHS law? Which was implemented around mid-2006?

Thanks!
