Ok, so on powering on now, I have no volume at all. A new rectifier valve was delivered today, so I am hoping this sorts the issue out. If not back to the amp repairers tomorrow.

Ok.

1. Fitted new JJ 5Y3 rectifier valve.
2. Switched on. Full volume.
3. Died after approx 60 seconds.
4. New valve now not lighting up.
5. Put old 5Y3 valve back in.
6. Switched on. Full volume.
7. Died after approx 2 mins.
8. Valve still showing that it is lit up.
9. Put new valve back in - not lighting up.

Exasperated!

Taking it back to the amp guy tomorrow. All advice appreciated.

The JJ rectifier tubes are generally reliable. The filament contacts on the tube socket may be overheating and loosing contact. Retension and clean the tube and socket pins.
The issue of DC on the input grids can be detected by unplugging the guitar after it fades out and then immediately replugging in. The sound will come back for a bit before it fades out.

Update from my amp tech:

You're not going to believe this but the fault on your amplifier was a connection on one of the heater pins of the rectifier valveholder that had never been soldered properly from new! The wire had solder on it but was just resting in the solder tag. I'm amazed it hasn't caused trouble before! This explains why your new rectifier valve wasn't lit some of the time. Both rectifier valves are OK and having soldered the loose connection I've had the amp running for a couple of hours with each valve.

Question from me: does this mean that the original transformer was Ok?

No, the original fault was that the output was always there but consistently low and the HT voltage was unvaryingly correct. The transformer was definitely the cause of that. The present fault caused the volume to fade to nothing after a time as the HT gradually disappeared as the rectifier valve heater went out, so the symptoms were different. You haven't paid for a transformer for nothing! I think disturbing things whilst fitting the transformer probably caused the other fault to show its face.

I have a rehearsal tomorrow, so will be able to give it a good thrashing.

Well said Sir. I have zero skills in this area which is why I use an amp tech.

I also mentioned that your......"amp tech"......doesn't seem to know his gluteous maximus from a female mammary gland. Find a new one.
