I never really understood the raison d'etre for the 400PS.

Anticipation of bands like AC/DC and Motörhead? :p

More likely it was CBS' reaction to the overpowered Marshalls from the late 60s, and not wanting to miss the boat (they did), combined with Don Randall having left Fender to start his own company, and they wanted to put his overpowered MOSFET amps to shame.

I don't see much more reason for the Evil Twin, to be honest. And people think I am crazy because I use an Orange Rocker as a bedroom amp... :o

More than 10 watts is too power full for home use. Your amp don't have a 25 watts output switching at the back ? Use it with volume control

Post some pics of the amp so we can definitively identify it by age and specific model.

All the companies were groveling to get their licks in during the "wattage wars" of the 1970's but the 400PS was really a loser by any practical measure. I respect Ed Jahns for designing precisely what FMI/CBS asked for but the amp was the most temperamental piece of gear that Fender ever made. The (purported) 435 watts of power were only available if three speaker cabinets were used and those (purported) 435 watts of power were contingent upon the use of one and only one particular power tube, Tung-Sol's NASA-spec 6550STR, and maintaining and/or servicing could only be performed by specially-trained (by Fender) technicians using exotic test equipment that most shops did not have access to. Was it a guitar amp or a bass amp? Who knew? Most bass players don't require reverb and tremolo just as most guitarists would loathe toting an amp head around that weighed more than a JBL-equipped Twin Reverb. It may have looked impressive perched upon its chrome-plated trolley but few venues (either then or now) were appropriate for such a behemoth.

If you want to use your high power amp at low volumes, and you find the volume controls too touchy when dialed that low, you may be able to achieve more precise control over low volume by running a volume pedal in the effects loop or in the preamp-out / power amp-in loop. I've done that with a number of different amps and it works well for me.
