IMO, if the amp isn't moved about a lot RoHS isn't as big an issue.

It's not merely an issue of movement or vibration. The repeated and prolonged heating and cooling of the chassis provides an even higher potential for solder joints fused with substandard solder to fail.

I hear ya, Arjay. I suppose I've not played many sessions more than about 2hours in duration w/ much regularity and can count my experience so far as fortunate. I also didn't see the gigging musician status of the op until re-reading the entire post.

In my experience, the main failure point for RoHS solder is when it's used on equipment that also has leaded solder. If the two solders ever touch, the galvanic difference eventually causes problems, in particular the unleaded solder detaching.

This is of particular importance for pickup soldering, where there are existing solder points you add to, or pre-tinned wires. If a pre-RoHS guitar, only use leaded solder, and if installing new pickups, clip off any tinned ends. If a post-RoHS guitar, make sure you use lead free solder, and if installing old pickups, clip off any tinned ends. Otherwise you may see problems after months or years, where solder detaches.

For amps, make sure you brush off absolutely every bit of existing solder from the contact points, unless you know you use the same type of solder.

One more question about the Hot Rod Deluxe 3. Seems as though quality may be an issue. I am not one to have to change a bunch of stuff or do mods to make something work. I would rather buy something and not have to worry about it.

Aside from the inferior RoHS solder, the HRDlx III has improvements over the previous versions, namely thicker circuit boards. Speaker and tube preferences are always subjective, you'll have to have a listen for yourself.

Any modern mass produced amp will have the RoHS solder (a few possible expensive exceptions), so buying a pre-2005 amp is one way to avoid that solder. That being said, the HRDlx III will stand up to any other modern amp.

So, all things considered, the sound that you like best should be the main determining factor.

So to clarify Fender amps pre 2005 are better made. Even though they are older they are more reliable. Is that correct? Can I ask if they are still fairly serviceable if they do go? Other than the DR polarity switch is there an easy way to know how old an amp is?

Curious also, there are a few Princeton Choruses out there for fairly cheap, around $400-500 cad. Noone here has mentioned that amp? Are they not good amps?

The Princeton Chorus *was* a great amp. In fact, it was Fender's most popular model during the mid/late '90s.
