Hi guys, I'm looking to move into the world of tube amps and am interested in going with a Blues Jr to pair up with my SRV strat for that obvious sound combination.

I will be purchasing a used one but I'm wondering if there's much difference between the older and newer editions and which ones are preferred?
90's, 2000's, Blues Jr III, the NOS, ones with Bill M mods..so many choices!

Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I fail to see the logic in playing a $2000 guitar through a $300 amp.

Some "enlightenment" please......?

Sure...I bought the guitar used for $800 from a good friend, and I'm a hobby player that plays in a small den room.

And besides..when have guitarists ever been logical? lol

I never quite bought into the BillM mods. Each to their own. Don’t let me stop you. I didn’t think my green pc-board Blues Junior with EL84 tubes needed to sound more Fendery with more traditional Fender tone stack cap values? Maybe more bass is ok. I just put a Bad Monkey pedal in front of it.

The Limited Edition models usually had upgraded speakers and different tolex colors. So if I was shopping I’d buy one where I like the tolex/grill cloth combo and maybe speaker. You can always change the speaker, but that’s added cost.

I read on the internet that newer editions tended to sound brighter with improvements in reverb noise, a reversed control panel, different speaker. Sounds good, but who knows. I’m not sure any edition was most popular stock because on the internet it seems people like to mod this amp. Why. (post with limited experience of using my own Blues Junior).

Happy New Year!

I would say there are better 1x12 combos out there (even for home use only), and I owned a BJr for several years. They run too hot, and mine soon had new tubes and some other work (too technical for me) to make it run cooler. With a Cannabis Rex speaker in it, it was much better (great as a platform for pedals, actually), but it cost me a couple of hundred quid to make it that way and I think I'd have preferred to put that money towards a better quality amp.

If you're buying secondhand, someone else will have taken the hit on the new price, so I'd say you can afford to be a bit more choosy!

I bought a Mesa Rectoverb 25 to replace the BJr, and I've been very happy with that for the last couple of years, but they are expensive (especially in GB!). If you're in the US, I'm sure you'd have a better choice at more reasonable prices. Don't just be seduced by the Fender name!

Cheers - Peter.
