Hi !

Got a Blues Deluxe '94/95 and one of my power tube is dead.

It was a JJ 6L6GC.

What tubes should I buy ? I play rock/blues from Black Keys to Queens Of The Stone Age. "Vintage" spirit.
So... I was about to say that I don't give a damn about cleans but as I use pedals a lot maybe I should better have a good clean... Isn't it ?

On the other hand, the Drive channel has to be dirty as it can be !

Should I change the preamp tubes too ? There's Sovtek. Is there something better for my type of music ?

Plus I learn I have to change a resistor or something ?

Can't pay the bill for a tech right now... I do pedals and stuff, I know how to solder, but never put my hands on an amp's guts ! (Or really small maintenance routine)
So if you can help me... Would be very nice of you !

Thanks a lot ! :D

Welcome! :)

How did you know only one 6L6GC died? Were there any symptoms? Like a loud pop.

Thanks!

It has some kind of snow flakes in it lol, it's whitish, the other tube looks like a normal tube... (As the preamp tubes look like. In term of color, not shape or size of course)

And the volume doesn't respond as it was. I can go to 4 or 5 and the volume isn't that loud. Before this, if I put it on 2, my ears bleed !
Plus the attacks of notes sound weird on the clean channel. Louder than everything else, and popping weirdly.

Thanks

A white coating within the glass envelope is usually indicative of a loss of vacuum within the tube. It happens periodically and for a variety of different reasons.

Yeah, lost vacuum. Check the glass where the pins insert into the tube, for cracks.

You can put in any tubes you want. Don't know if th'll work.

All the original tubes were sovtek. I'm not sure Fender was using Groove tubes back,1995/6. The amp came with sovtek 5881WXT as output tubes. It's my understanding that's some tube in itself. So I forget if it's a 30 W tube.

Bias. I'd first give R87 a visual. If it looks like its different than other resistors, its been changed. If it looks like the other resistors and is colored coded red, purple, its the 27k in schematic. I'd guess the supply works with sovtek 5881's stock. I might then buy some of those tubes. I think the bias supply is limited on the negative V side, so if you put in some hot 6L6 tubes its possible the grid can't get that idle i down. Then its a -v doubler,,,ok i'm going off the deep end now. I rely so much on these forums for help and other know more than me, let me stop now. Who knows tubes?

The whole bias thing is maybe like a doctor visit. Best to stay away from the hospital, and no adjustments are needed, just the side effects from the meds are enough. If you buy the right tubes, it will be smooth sailing and the amp doesn't catch on fire. Second option buy the tubes that you found in the amp? but those failed.

A correctly biased amp will run efficiently and maximizes the life of your tubes.

Under - biased amps will lack of punch and tubes will run hotter , shorter tube's life .

Overbiased amps will sound thin and brittle. with tubes running too cool for proper performance .
A correctly biased amps will sound clean and tight a moderate volumes, than at higher volumes breakup and distort musically .
